Etheric Light is too rare, and it kills the desire to play.

For once, I have to agree with IGN(orant). I understand why Bungie made Etheric Light so rare, and it's a two-fold reason. 1) They didn't want everyone hitting 34 in the first week. (Understandable) 2) The rarity is a delicate balance. Just rare enough that it entices you to play more, but not so rare that it seems to be like a second job in order to get even one piece of Etheric Light. Unfortunately (as with the rest of the game until present), Bungie has no idea about how to properly balance the grind vs. reward ratio. They've hit the latter part of point 2. They've made the Etheric Light so rare that it is far too difficult and offered in far too little activities with far too little of a drop chance. They've made it such a chore to get, that for many people it is killing the drive to play now. There's plenty of people in my situation. I've played for two weeks now and still haven't seen a single piece of Etheric Light drop. Now; there are plenty of people who have three 34's, all weapons upgraded, and Etheric Light to spare. But Bungie missed the target audience on this one (unless their target audience is between the ages of 12-16, out of school with 16 spare hours to grind out that much Light...). Most people don't have the 10-12 hours at a pop to grind out Etheric Light to get all of their equipment upgraded in a week. Hell, most people don't even have that kind of free time on the weekends. A possible fix would be to keep the guaranteed Etheric Light "gift" of the 34 and 35 Prison of Elders, but add in a drop chance for the small chests at the end of the 28 and 32 Prison runs. Increase the chance for a drop for the Nightfall and the Crucible (hell, add in a chance for a drop in the Crucible) as well as the Iron Banner once it starts up again. An increase of 10, 15, or even 20 percent along with the additional places to get it would make the grind much less agonizing overall, and would have the added effect of making people want to play more than they do now. Making the Etheric Light the carrot at the end of the stick is one thing. But you've got to use a shorter stick. nobody will want the carrot if they can't even see it at the end of the stick. As it stands right now, there's nothing in sight to chase after, and it just kills the desire to play. Edit 1 (of what will probably be the first of several edits...): I fully know where to currently get Etheric Light, that's not the issue. the issue is the time it takes to get even one piece. Most people only have 2-3 hours to play per night. Therefore, most people find it very difficult to "do everything in all characters per week" like you kids on summer break are getting more than twelve hours to accomplish. Edit 2: PvP isn't everyone's strong-suit, nor is so easy as "git gud skrub". Those of you who say "it's a cakewalk to go 9-0 in the trials and get 3 EL per character per week" should probably quit talking. You're only making yourselves look ignorant, not like the PvP-gods you think you are. Edit 3: ironBill posted this, and he clarifies the intent of this post nicely.
FWIW, I couldn't care less about getting through ToO. Really, I'm finding I don't care about hitting 34 on all characters either. No point to it. Just so we know who we both are. The OP is talking about play balance, and whether or not Bungie is hitting their market, which I happen to find is a great point. Who IS the demographic? Are they trying for a very select subset of skills to reward this time around? Sure seems that way. Good PvP players are strutting around like they invented fire... happy for 'em too I guess, but if that's all this DLC is intended to give us, my question follows - is that all there is to this?
Edit 4: Calling me a "scrub" doesn't do anything as I really don't care. All you're doing by slinging names like that is highlighting the lack of strength in your argument. Edit 5: pablogordon had another great idea. I've quoted it here to give it some love.
There should have been an exchange rate at the speaker for Etheric light. Baffling really that it's not there. Make it really expensive. The most expensive thing in the game currently is that ship from Petra at what, 17.5k glimmer? Make the Etheric light cost that plus one each of the radiants, and ten each of the ascendants, and some coins and motes for good measure. The speaker exchange was a very good step in the right direction to sinking some currencies, especially Friday when Xur sold the helm engrams and now that most everyone has a couple few weapons they want to re-roll. Why not just add the Etheric light? If we are really honest, the point isn't just hitting max anymore (and thankfully so) but putting together a setup with both the perks and looks that suit your play style!
Edit 6: And, here's a link for why the PoE loot system is broken in general, but parallels well with the rarity of Ethereal Light. http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/05/28/destinys-prison-of-elders-has-a-serious-loot-problem/?utm_campaign=yahootix&partner=yahootix Edit 7: FatChubbE offers a very good breakdown of what the responsible adult Gamer deals with in trying to overcome the base design of this DLC. It is an accurate description, and props go to him for it.
The adults I play this game with aren't always on. Three are full time Grad students with jobs, two are parents with wives and kids. My son plays between school and football practice and games when he's not doing chores or homework. The full time gamers in my clan have all partnered up, so getting help from them is difficult. The "it's easy" comments applies only to those with spare time. We did one nightfall and one 32 prison of elders. That's all we had time for. Don't get me wrong, the etheric light is there. It's obtainable. But it's not obtainable "easy". Easy when applied to time spent obtaining does not bode well for the working/school demographic. It applies only to destiny players who play destiny for hours on end every day. To put it into perspective we did (two) ToO matches. that's right 2. We were not in control of the time. With loading, and 5 round matches, two matches took an hour. If you do 8 and win flawlessly without the other team winning a single point, 3 hours at least grinding for an etheric light. If you add a 34 or 35 prison of elders and you're a super stud team that's another 2 hours with loading, game time, running back to the airlock. And 2 hours is giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're really really good. If you're average, add at least another hour or two. So the argument that it's "easy" is a matter of perspective. Easy as far as skill level? Or easy as a matter of "I got all the time I need to play?" Either way, getting etheric light takes more time than any other currency we've been offered thus far. That's just how it is. People took days off to play this. Which kind of gives you an idea of the commitment to time you have to invest to receive these "easy" rewards.
Edit 8: IIFormer GamerII also has a great take on the time sink necessary and the base design of these DLC.
You are without a doubt correct when it comes to grinding through the same content three times over in Destiny, and the annoyances, redundancy, sheer boredom, and time consumption that comes along with it. After playing through the base game and TDB I've come to realize that destiny simply isn't a game that can be played causally, and if you attempt to do so you should be prepared to put yourself at an extreme disadvantage. This was my main reason for intentionally skipping out on HoW, because I knew that the never ending grind would continue. If you have a lot of spare time on your hands, Destiny is a great game to play with clan mates. But truth be told you cannot simply play destiny in a casual manner such as battlefield or call of duty, without hindering your progression dramatically and being seen as a "slacker," "leech," or a "freeloader." Destiny's new loot looks nice, but I just can't take the grind anymore.
Edit 9: To all the people telling us that not everyone should be able to get to end-game content, or that parts of the game should be locked except for the "hardcore" crowd: So having entire portions of the game locked out to a player simply for no other reason than Bungie feeling the need to promote elitist alienation of their player base... is ok? The only thing more wrong than Bungie's "philosophy" are the people who jump at any chance to support it.

I had all 34's by Friday (3 days after drop). Its not rare or hard to get. I was also still in school for 2 weeks after drop, doing finals too.

    • Lol if you go flawless on all three characters in trials it's guaranteed 9 from just trials alone. If have 4 just sitting in my vault I have nothing to do with it

        • Games like this require time. This is a game that's ground breaking for consoles, some people.. people like you just don't understand how MMO style games work. It takes a lot of time to get to end game, it isn't just handed to you. This isn't CoD.

          • I just don't see why it's ok for me to trade a currency for another currency but it's not ok that etheric light be in the mix. However you can bet your azz when the next dlc drops you'll be able to trade for etheric light. It's simple. If a mote is worth X. A strange coin worth X....so on and so forth. There's a number that etheric light should be worth. Find the number and let us find ways to get it. I don't need the hundreds of motes I have to re roll these sorry HOW weapons. But I sure would love to use them to bring life to my old gear. It's not like the motes were given to me. I grind plenty for them.

            • Etheric light is too hard to come by for casual PvE players. I get the idea behind it is not have old gear become obsolete but for a large swathe of the player base it's impossible to come by. Why isn't it in the Speakers material exchange? Make it expensive, make it worth a ridiculous amount of motes/shards/energies etc or only let you buy one a week but put it in reach of people who don't want to grind ToO or high level PoE.

              • This. ALL OF THIS. Bless this thread. My two friends and I have been playing Destiny since the day it came out, and have been on board with house of wolves since the moment it launched on the server. We've spent hours trying to ready ourselves for PoE and all the new content with the raised level caps, but after this entire time we've hit such a huge impass. Last week we managed to earn maybe 1 EL per person from completing the level 34 PoE run. It was tough since we were all still 32-33, but we made it after a really long haul. This week however we can't help but feel the struggle is too dire for any EL rewards. Bungie kind of screwed a lot of people out of getting EL this week with a dramatically increased difficulty on the 34 PoE run and boss, which I found to be a bloody mess after trying for over TWO HOURS on the boss fight alone in the final round and we still walked away with nothing to show for it. We could always try level 35 (and we did) which was seemingly easier (????) until we got to the fourth round. Again, a few hours later we walked away with nothing. The fact that EL is a super-special drop in only super-difficult events is just maddening. We've played the nightfall on three characters both this week and last, with no EL anywhere to be seen. We've been spending at least 5-8 hours a day trying to get EL in PoE and in nightfalls, crucible daily and everything else we can think of. The game has been set in a kind of way that's left a lot of people feeling helpless and overwhelmed. In order to get to level 34, you need EL. In order to get EL, you need to be level 33 or higher. It goes hand-in-hand with that trapped job mindset going around these days "In order to get a job you need experience, but the only way to get experience is to get a job." Essentially, you need experience to get experience. I figure that some of you understand what I mean and can back me up on how unfair and crippling that is. To feel that the odds are stacked against you even after you try your best is a new thing for HoW. In no time before this has the path to leveling up been this out of reach and contradictory. Even with all this going on, there's still that one person in our friendslist that has every character maxed, gets all the new guns/gear before anyone else and has EL falling out of their pockets at the seams. Especially when that person was a known cheeser before HoW, so it feels more than just a little unfair? I don't think it's exactly the time you put into the game, it's some kind of RNG bias or something. (I'm not going to go off about unfair odds or what bungie needs to fix etc, etc) But I mean with my friends and I doing our best and being proven time after time that our best isn't worth squat, it is extremely frustrating to keep playing when all you have to look forward to is pushed out of your reach. Each week is basically the 34 PoE and the nightfall per character, then there's nothing to accomplish until next week. They should add EL into final drops for the raids on hard mode, and even stay true to their word and have a chance for EL to drop in the crucible daily package, not just passage coins and motes of light every single time. At least then you have a better shot at getting rewarded for putting hours of time into the game. Sometimes, playing for hours just isn't enough, you have to be favored by the game's RNG to see any results. You either get all the rewards for average effort, or you try your hardest and get absolutely nothing for it. This thread is brilliant, I really want to see bungie actually listen this time and make the game feel like it's worth continuing past level 32.

It's not rare. You have two high level characters, right? That means you can get 6 etheric light per week. This doesn't even count etheric light from ToO and nightfalls.

                      • Add it to the exotic loot tables in every activity. It may not be a direct solution, but at least it adds the desire to raid and hit up the Roc/Dragon strike lists once again.

                          • I agree with the OP. What I struggle to understand is the resistance to some of these alternative ideas from the player base. Hypothetically, what if there was a currency conversion from motes to EL thus allowing the casual player a path to 34. Why would the hardcore players care? You'll still beat me in PvP and have higher PvE kill ratios. If I chose this route to max level, that does not detract from the skill shown by the hardcore player who did it through great play in PoE 35 multiple times. All I can think of, is that it has something to do with status. I'm a very average player, I barely hold my own in 28 PoE and I respect the skill shown by the hardcore players whenever I play with them. If I, as a casual player, had a path to max level, I would still respect the hardcore gamers achievements. The problem might be though, how would you know who's hardcore and who isn't. At the moment you can pretty much tell, but allowing the casual player a path would remove this distinction. Perhaps that is the problem for some. In the end it's a game and I for one would like the possibility to experience all the content that I want in a way that I choose to play. It's not a zero sum game. Just because somebody else is given an easier path (from your perspective) doesn't mean your achievements are less respected. I don't want to be given something for free, I'm happy to work for it. Accumulating motes, for example, would still be hard for me because I don't really play much. But it's a way I can play in shorter bursts of time. Cheers.

                            • Couldn't agree more. I haven't had one etheric light yet as I don't have the time. Previously I could do a few checkpoints of raids and eventually get the gear I needed then do bounties to level it up. Now we're expected to spend hours in trials or PoE (which goes against everything I've ever read about safe gameplay) to be able to ascend gear. I've lost the will to play destiny anymore as I don't think I'm going to be able to get to 34 and have maxed weapons without it taking me months. I got Witcher 3 on Saturday and haven't put destiny back in the disc drawer since. Its a real shame as I've loved playing destiny since September but I don't have the desire to do it anymore as it won't get me anywhere. Starting to feel left behind.

                                • I think its very easy to obtain. 6 total from POE, 9 total from ToO if you go flawless three times, 6 more from IB, plus the chance at it during nightfalls.

This week it took me max 3 hours to complete 32 34 and 35 on 1 char. That means it took around 1 hour each poe. I Wouldn't say its too hard. *Get a good team together. *Have a microphone. *Check the app for what race you will face each round and bring the weapons needed for that modifier. *Make sure to discuss your perks so you benefit each other. *Make sure to have tactics ready for what is to come. If for example heavy ammo spawns my job is to put a blinding bubble on top of it and jump in and out and blow up everything, while one of my team mates finish of the things I miss and the 3rd is disabling mines. This is not about having friends. I do this with random people, both from the Bungie forum and Facebook communities. Etheric light is not time consuming to get. Not at all. However it will require you to do some more work than when you join your average crucible and spin around hoping to hit someone. Plan ahead and use tactics. That is the key. If you can't do it you either need to change your plan or look to yourself what you are doing wrong. It's not the game holding you back. It's you.

                                    • To be honest, I didn't like that e-light is so rare as well. Until I got one from the nightfall. As much as I would like to max out all my weapons and armor, I kind liked the stress of not knowing what I should use it on. I have three characters with so much great stuff. Do I bring up a characters light level? If so, which one? I have old vendor weapons that I haven't used since before the dark below. House of wolves introduced a lot of badass weaponry too. So many choices and one piece of etheric light. Long story short, I am now the proud owner of a 365 dmg Devil You Know, and have no regrets. #fun I only feel this way because it brought me back to the good old days where you had to really think about what you wanted to upgrade when you got your hands on some shards/energies. I think that if it were to stay rare, people would have much more appreciation for their weapons and armor.

                                    • I don't think it is too rare, but I think that etheric light being more difficult to obtain than an exotic shard is idiotic.

                                      • Its bit hard to get at all just do trials every week i ussually get at least 5 wth eric light just from two characters in trials every week and if you do 34 Poe then that adds at least 1-3

                                      • I'm gonna make it simple for you, when you don't know to explain yourself you use overwhelmed amount of words, so... If Bungie makes Etheric Light in a higher drop, this won't be so rare, will be something common. Everybody wanted Gjallarhon when I think on September, once you get it more than 4 times for you it's okay if you dismantle it or no, same with Crux of CROTA and many other items, gear. Conclusion: If BUNGIE change the drop and you get many Etheric Lights you will be in GameStop buying a new game and bitching here, leave the game like it is. My opinion, have a great day.

                                      • 6 a week if you have 3 characters, just from PoE. Nightfall can drop it. Iron Banner has guaranteed etheric light. Trials of Osiris has etheric light drops as well.

                                        • It's kind of rare if you don't play pvp that much. I won't play trials at all so there goes that idea. I don't mind playing crucible or iron banner though. To me I find them more enjoyable however the PVE is what I mainly play for and with 3 characters at level 33(Titan is at 34 actually) that's only 3 a week for me guaranteed unless I get light drops in a nightfall. I would include the light from the 35 but I'm not playing that at 33 unless I have 2 34s with me that know what to do and won't mind carrying me through. If you're under leveled and not relying on pvp like me then it will be a minute to get the light. What helps is to do the 32 poe every week to get the armor cores and trade them for armor pieces from variks.
