Is mortal combat fun to play? I've always been of the impression it's just a mesh of spamming buttons.

Well all fighting games can essentially boil down to that. Although, I will say that I enjoy it more than I thought. But I enjoy fighting games a lot. There are some online players though that do play that distance game and spam certain moves.
