I liked Halo and the mulitplayer was always great with friends, but the story never grabbed me until 4. You could tell Halo was in the right hands when 343i took over, at least if we're talking about the story side of things. Unlike Bungie they brought the lore from the books to the games and actually gave the characters some depth and emotion. We also had a tangible villain in the Didact. Can't wait to see what Halo 5 brings in terms of story.

  • I've got the impression from the beginning that 343 wanted to expand to the story to something bigger from the start. I've enjoyed it.

  • Halo 4 was Th e worst of all of them. It was less in depth than any of the others.

Quite the opposite actually. Halo CE had a simple plot (not a bad one at all, but it had no complexity, though to be fair it was the first in the series and didn't need it), no character development, and a protagonist who had the personality of a brick. Halo 2 introduced interesting elements in the story with the Covenant politics and the Arbiter story line (a character who had an emotional arc, albeit a simple one) but once people got a hold of playing a character that spoke more then a few lines and had interesting qualities they rejected the idea. The popular opinion during the release of Halo 2 was that the Arbiter storyline wasn't good at all. The revisionist history of Halo 2 is pretty funny considering a lot of people didn't like the campaign back in the day (amazing the power nostalgia has). Halo 3 regressed on the story side, with again taking control of the walking, talking emotionless brick, terrible acting for some characters, and some bad plot holes (though none as bad as Reach, which I'm going to ignore since it's a bad stain in the Halo canon). Now in the books Master Chief did have an actual personality. I love it when people like to argue that MC shouldn't have emotions or show distress or confusion when the fact is he is human, and that despite all the stuff that happened to him, it doesn't make a bit of sense for him to have zero emotions. In the books he went through emotional conflicts and had emotional arcs, none of which is acknowledged in Bungie's Halo games. We come to Halo 4 and finally the campaign is treated with some respect towards the characters. We finally get quality acting, and Chief has to face the dilemma that he might not be able to save a person he cares deeply about. He goes through an emotional journey and comes out a different person at the end. He for once had an arc. Not to mention the fact that actual characters and lore from the books were brought into Halo 4. In the very first scene we get to see the Spartan IIs right before they become enhanced, which was taken straight from the books, and we got the Didact who was a character from the Forerunner novels. There was also a lot of emotional depth in character actions for those who noticed them. Halo 4 definitely had the best campaign story wise.

  • Halo 3 is actually a pretty simple game looking at it as well. Really...dull. Especially comparing it to Halo 4 or the remastered Halo 2.

  • You read any of the novels before Halo 4?

  • What you mean exactly? Do you mean have I read books that take place chronologically in the Halo timeline before Halo 4, or do you mean have I read the books that came out before the release of Halo 4? Either way it's a yes. I haven't read every book, and admittedly I don't remember a whole lot but I've read around 8 of the books.
