"Games today are too easy."

>Leaves to go play Goldeneye in invincibility mode to relive the golden days where gaming was still hard Edit 1: Nobody seems to get the point of this post, which is to make fun of people like that who say that old video games were actually challenging, then go enter cheat codes to win the game.

  • Yeah, but the weed these days is far superior to my day so all games are more difficult when baked.

      • GTA:San Andreas had some of the best cheats ever. Driving around in a tank killing fully armed pedestrians was a hoot...

I cheated whenever I could... Then and now, I never watched a lot of TV and I used video games as a stop gap between toys and playing outside. Once I ditched the toys and playing outside, I stuck to video games. I played games for the entertainment value of the stories or just the fun of the gameplay. I usually wasn't in it for a challenge or sense of accomplishment. I enjoy certain RPGs and grinding games to beef up my character, even if they're weak on plot or repetitive. I do appreciate the modern wonders of waypoint markers, checkpoints, auto saving and all the rest, but some games really did dial it down too much. Mass Effect 3 is a prime example. On the "tell me a story" or whatever the easy mode is called, I could literally walk into a room full of bad guys, slowly turn in a circle and shoot each one at my leisure. I actually got bored with it being that easy. There's easy and there's trivializing fights to the point of being annoying, rather than fun. I personally like the regenerating health in a lot of games. It allows the game to dish out more damage and allows the player to be more reckless, which I find fun (in cinematic games). When health is a finite resource, I have to play more conservatively and less in a way that would make Michael Bay proud. Some games should be played conservatively (Dark Souls) and others more like a bad action movie (Call of Duty). That said, some games were too hard TMNT and Battletoads on the NES come to mind. People who beat those were the legends of their day. I had a few great accomplishments myself, after using the crutch of 30 lives in Contra more times than I could count, I managed to finish the game only dying once. I'm sure I couldn't repeat that victory today, but back then I had a different set of skills. Today, I'm mildly better at aiming with my thumbs, but I'm still better at non-thumb-aiming games. I know this was a satire post, but I felt the topic at large deserved a thoughtful reply.

Not all of us used game genies and cheat codes. Some of the older games were hard and didn't even have battery back up or codes saving system. You would need to play the whole game in one sitting. Goldeneye you had to beat par times to unlock cheats. Games are more complex as technology advanced it's probably about the same difficulty wise in comparison, even taking into account check points and saves.

              • It was the lack of a save system that made the old games so damn hard. You had to play start to finish in one sitting. Ninja Gaiden, Contra (w/o cheat), ghosts n goblins, etc. Brutal, just brutal. Imagine playing destiny campaign and dying on the black garden and having to start back on the first campaign mission. And if you got bored or had to stop playing, your progress restarted on the first campaign mission. That was what was impressive about finishing those old games. You know that whoever did was glued to their seat for hours on end and basically never died

Yeah the good days when you would try forever to beat a section of a game. Finally beat it, rejoice! Then proceed to exit the game, just to come face to face with the realization that you forgot to save your game.

                  • I think by old games they mean 2D arcade style shit. Games that had no saves or checkpoints and took high amounts of skill to actually master. Right now I bet none to hardly any of you would have the skill or patience to beat Super Mario Bros. or Pacman, but could go through the campaign of any modern FPS in less than a day on the hardest difficulty.

                    • Games have gotten easier, but a lot of games back in the day were difficult for bad reasons, such as not explaining how to do anything. It was done on purpose to sell strategy guides.

Using cheat codes has no bearing on whether or not the game was challenging, which they often were. You try beating Contra without the 30-live code; it's a nightmare. Still, games today are made with the lowest common denominator in mind. Levels are designed to be linear and straightforward, so people don't get lost actually exploring, in addition to heavily scripted design which punish players who go ahead or think outside the box. RPGs are littered with map and quest markers, and NPCs have convenient exclamation points over their head, because we're apparently too stupid to figure out stuff on our own. There's regenerating health in a lot of games, because keeping track of a health meter and finding medkits is too hard. And so on. P.S. Using #satire doesn't make your post satirical.
