I guess they figured they should distance themselves from Ledger's Joker as much as possible because they were never going to out-do him. Just go completely the other direction and say, "Well, you can't compare apples and oranges..."

This one feels like a hybrid of Nicholson and Ledger. Someone who is utterly and completely off the deep end like Ledger's, but with the terrifying enjoyment of it that Nicholson pulled off.
