Seems like the Oni war propaganda continues in Episode 2. Once again Ben is being fed lies which is what ONI wants him to hear and, not what he wants to know, the truth. The leads Ben is getting from Oni are just fake and for all we know could be hired actors and scripted. The only solid information he is getting, is from his own sources that he finds or, happens to stumble across.

Me either Ben got what he needed from them. To me them two are the truth, Oni and the gym owner are lying.

yeah ellie and katrina were actual friends with chief when he was a kid and the teacher/gym owner and the admiral are just pushing an oni narrative, i mean giraud used his own contacts to find the girls and oni doesnt know it yet
