I agree vendor weapons suck, but only the Vanguard ones. I've had great success using Crucible weapons like Do Gooder V, B-Line Trauma and, in particular, TFWPKY 1969
I can easily recommend that Hand Cannon, if you have the Crucible Marks (150).

TFWPKY 1969 is such a good hand cannon. I've got two, one from the vendor and another from a package with explosive rounds.

I think they can be better but generally I get the same weapons and the rare ones like Red Hand 9 in the faction packages or in drops.
