I always had the impression, the classes are not well balanced and therefore I went to destinytracker.com and did some research.
I evaluated several Top-100 rank lists (score, K/D etc.) on their site across all platforms and statistically counted the occuring classes.
This is the result as a distribution of classes among the Top 100 lists:
63% - Hunters
23% - Titans
14% - Warlocks
This leaves two conclusions:
1. Good players play Hunters.
2. Hunters are the most powerful class concerning the Crucible.
Personally I doubt 1, at least in with this numbers. Hunters are the most played class, but the distribution in pure played classes is somehow like 38:31:31 (H:T:W).
How would you interpret these numbers?
edit: It's typical for these forums, how you get attacked and flamed if you open hypothesis like this.
Don't get me wrong, kids, I'm not calling for a nerf or anything. I just want to discuss the numbers.
And I expect Bungie to do a decent retrospective in the classes balance!
edit2: It's interesting to see, how nobody seems to care about this thread but the the Hunter fanboys, who solely come in to cry and tell me to stop crying and to stop to critic their beloved Hunter.
This community is really immature and childish.
edit3: A lot of people start to argue with class skills or player skills, but can we please reduce to the numbers I posted and you can try explaining them?

Don't see how they're op. A shotgun works pretty nice against Bladedancers. And this is coming from one of those' Hunter fanboys.' One simple solution.
get gud
I think why Hunter class is the most popular it is the easiest class to play in pvp. Coupled with blink, cloak and a super that cover long ranges, it does rule statistically. However, I think the play itself is balanced among all classes and by no means any class is OP. A good Hunter can rack huge number of kills as much as the others. It is just bit easier and perhaps more forgiving than say a Titan especially when you are beginning in pvp. But like I said it is no guarantee if they are any good at all stages. i am sure IB can point the numerous times Hunter classes are at the bottom half of the table. Cant say about ToO as I havent had a chance to play more

In my opinion, Hunters seem like the best in 6v6 gametypes and Warlocks seem the best in 3v3 gametypes. The less players there are the less likely you are to get multiple kills with your super, especially if the other team has a good headset and can easily determine where a super is being used. That's where grenades come in and Warlocks, in my opinion, have the best grenades.
-
Took my level 13 hunter to crucible last night and I can safely say even with only half perks unlocked it's so much easier to use than a full maxed Titan. Also the 1st weapon you get in the game (Kostovo or some thing) is a beast.
-
Hunter talents are PvP oriented. They lack the talents and abilities that could make them viable in PvE. Not including invis.
-
Hunters have been the most powerful class in Pvp since day one concerning their supers. Only people who will deny this are hunter advocates.
-
I just like agility man step off :-(
-
Top 2 players in the world use warlocks...
-
I think it's because of how much they hyped up Hunter. Everybody was saying how Hunter was going to have best jump(lol) and people believed them.
-
Look at the Iron Banner. 90% Hunters only, but NOOO, they're in now way OP. Laughing my ass off!
-
I agree with you. The numbers don't lie. The characters are way unbalanced. Just like how lots of top players use TLW exclusively. Tells you something about the weapon. Not calling for a nerf, just agreeing.
-
Nope not true They are just NOOB friendly BUT if you know how to play you own with every class gotta love those fusion grenades on sunsinger or the almighty bubble with saint-14 on the bubble bro
-
Muted
-
I don't think there op I can't seem to work my hunter In crucible as well as my Titan
-
No, bad players play hunters because they are too op
-
Each class has their perks
-
Are they OP? Debatable. But let's look at it like this...if they weren't good in PvP, no one would use them because The Traveler knows they aren't worth a thrall's butt in PvE.
-
I wouldn't say GG is OP, but Blade dancer? Definitely.
-
Laughable that people say the most skilled players play hunters and it has nothing to do with hunters being the best PVP class ability-wise. When the SUROS Regime was OP in PVP--was it because the "most skilled" players used that gun or because the gun was so damn good time-to-kill wise? Think about it...
-
It takes me like 5-6 matches to complete the "Kill 25 Warlocks" bounty because the majority of players in Crucible are Hunters and Titans.
-
A hunter is the crucible version of the easy button. I play all three classes in crucible. First warlock. Second titan. Hunter was the last. And it is by far the easiest class to do good with. Rarely do I get under a 2.0 with at least 15 kills on my hunter.
-
Hunters offer more flexibility and that is why people use them, warlocks are without question the most powerful.
-
Nice research, thanks for posting. Without a doubt, Hunters are the best PVP class. It has nothing to do with the most-skilled players using hunters--their skills are by far the best for getting kills in PVP. Pretty funny that people here are trying to deny that.
-
Hunters the #1 choice for unskilled players since 9/9/14
-
Well one class has to be the best
-
Hunters are my friend
