Do I have to beat it on normal before I can attempt hard mode?

I think you have to but I am not sure. You really want to do normal first several times so you know what you are doing. My group has finished hard several times but so far this week no luck and we have been literally fighting Crota for over 6 hrs now and finish him 3 times and it killed us and didn't count even though he had no health. Even have it recorded to post to youtube.
