To Pimp a Butterfly

Kendrick's new album dropped not that long ago and I recently purchased it. I only purchase album of artists that I like. I know there are some who will say that I should've just pirated it but idc. What are your thoughts on Kendrick Lamar's new album? Like it? Hate it? Let down? Best album of the year?

  • I heard it sucked compared to GKMC but I haven't got around to listening to it. He's an amazing rapper and probably the best out of the new school but I've been listening to more underground stuff lately.

    • It is definitely a great album. Very powerful stuff, beautiful. I love how jazz was very heavy in this one. Granted this album may or may not be a commercial success (I don't know and haven't really checked). Reason being the nature of the album and how it was put together. Mad City had a lot of mainstream sounding single tracks that would work out of context on that album. However Butterfly is more of a whole package deal. There may be 3 or 4 single worthy tracks on there. To apreciate it you would have to listen to the songs in order and throughout. In terms of appeal, I don't see it having as much as Mad City mainly because of the major tones of the album. At least from my perspective. I feel a lot of guilt and self hate coming from it. As if because of making it big and getting out of Compton he should feel guilty about it, or he owes those that didnt. "Survivors guilt" he called it. This is utter bullshit to me but whatever. Point is, it can be a tough depressing album to listen to. And not in an Eminem way. His intentions however are so pure that it is painful to listen to though. You can hear in it how much he loves his people, want to be a positive example and to raise them up. I still already love this album though and I do hope it becomes successful. Kendrick definitely deserves it.
