Are Sniper Rifles Appropriate for the Special Slot?

Yeah, I'd expect to see them in the heavy slot.

No, they're fine where they are.

Maybe, but I love my sniper, so hands off!

Does anyone else find it strange that sniper rifles are in the special slot instead of the heavy slot? I know this will probably incite passionate responses in the negative, but hear me out. I'm usually quick to state that Destiny isn't Halo and that it requires another way of thinking, but traditionally, sniper rifles have been top-tier power weapons, often superseding rocket launchers in effectiveness and desirability. Other shooters have brought them into primary and secondary slots by relatively nerfing them quite a bit, but Destiny isn't doing that. In fact, Destiny's snipers are even more powerful than Halo's. In general, Destiny's snipers go above and beyond traditional sniper rifles with perks, unique attributes, and accessibility. The case in PvE While it's fun to have ample ammo for my favorite sniper rifles in PvE, it's sort of a bummer that it's so easy to choose between snipers and rockets because we can have both and that choice doesn't exist. It makes boss fights, in particular, which are already honestly shallow and uninteresting (sorry), even shallower. Why choose a shotgun or a fusion rifle where a sniper will do much more damage from a safe distance, especially when there are sniper rifles that effectively or literally have infinite ammunition? The case for Crucible In Crucible, with the sniper rifles in the special slot, it means there are always players watching the long sight lines with relatively easy OSK abilities, sometimes turning matches into slow crawls toward inevitability. In games where sniper rifles are treated as power weapons, these kinds of lockdowns are more often temporary, but with ammunition in abundance, they can be great sources of frustration. Of course, just about every weapon in the special slot is a source of frustration in Crucible, but I digress. In general, I also wonder if the ready availability of snipers contributes to the unpopularity of scout rifles. Maybe if snipers were less abundant in the heavy slot, scout rifles could truly be the go-to for long-range combat. As is, the primary weapon gain at range is minimized by the overbearing presence of sniper rifles. To be clear, I'm not saying definitively that snipers should switch slots (although my buddies, Devil Walker, Phogoth, Sepiks Prime, Valus T'aruc, and the Archon Priest would probably vote for that). I'm just saying I find it a little odd that they are both so powerful and abundant, and I'm curious if anyone else feels the same way.

  • They were originally heavies Only problem is they'd never be used. LMGs and rockets deal more damage more efficiently

    • If sniper rifles were in the heavy slot they would have to made OHK no matter where you hit your target in order to be as effective as rocket launchers or machine guns

      • Ice breaker away gain ammo then you technically be able to always use your heavy in the crucible. So basically I get to use pulse rifles that been buff, shotgun or fusion on people and use ice breaker at any time. Yeah I can see this being a trend strategy. It best we leave sniper as a special.

Well the idea of Sniper being in the primary is not alien since most FPS games consider snipers and shotguns as primaries

          • I agree, they should be heavies. One of my primary gameplay concerns post beta was the ability to swap out weapons without penalty, and the over abundance of sniper ammo. And like all Bungie snipers, these things have power. It does lead to shallow gameplay. I say move them to heavy and actually introduce some conflict in picking your loadout. I'd also like to see hand cannons move to special, but that would incite a particular riot I want to avoid.

          • No, if you put sniper as a heavy then you'd have to make fusion rifles heavy as well, fusion rifles have been argued to do more damage than precision shots with snipers if all pellets hit, which is easy with a boss or major.
