How many of you have or have thought about doing commentary?

I've thought about this for a while. I watch Pewdiepie and Tobuscus and some others, just like a lot of people here. They play video games and commentate while doing them. Some channels talk about things relevant to gameplay while others just try to be funny, like the two I listed above. And I've thought to myself at times, "I could do that." I was wondering how many of you have thought about it as well? I even went so far as to look up the materials needed, like quality screen recording and the editing software... They were expensive. Another barrier in my way would be the fact that for the PC at least, I have no computer capable of running even the most simple modern games well enough. My PC cannot run WoW, Minecraft, you name it. Hell, it can barely even run The Walking Dead, and that has to be a resolution half my screen size with all minimum settings. Yet still the thought is in my mind, if only for my own enjoyment rather than anybody else's. And mind you, commentating isn't limited to games. You can commentate on TV commercials, television, books, movies, you name it! Games are just the common interest we all focus on here on Bnet! And speaking of equipment for it as I did earlier, you don't want to just get bare-bones, you know? I mean, we've all seen some pretty shoddy machinimas made after kids have watched Red Vs. Blue or Dues Ex Machina or the likes. Nobody wants to be put in the 'just another kid' category, so when you do do something you need to make sure it's done well. So again, how many of you have thought about it? Did you seriously consider it or was it only a dream, if anything? What made you stop? Or hell, have any of you actually succeeded? Do we have any quality Bnet commentators to look towards? What do you focus on, funny or relevant? do you just do games or have you branched out? If you're only one one genre, then why?

I went as far as uploading videos to YouTube but then I kept them unlisted and eventually deleted them. I don't think it's something I want to do right now. As for style, I was going for more tutorial based videos, covering MMO bosses from a healer's perspective while discussing the strategy my guild uses. But then, looking at what else was out there, I didn't feel good uploading something that wasn't equal in quality...and I am not good at editing. So for now I've just been making short videos for my SWTOR Guild.

  • I've dappled, but I tend to repeat myself and stutter sometimes. It gets annoying.

I seriously considered it (same with making machinima) a while back (a few years ago), but I've never actually attempted to do so. I've watched commentaries and machinimas (machinima not so much, good stuff is rarer) for years, and I had the thought as well that I could pull it off, too. I've had the PC quality to do so, just never had the drive. But, everyone starts at the beginning, so there's really nothing to be lost (dignity, perhaps) in trying.

  • I've wanted to do this for quite some time, but I only have funny conversations when I'm with my friends....or when I'm in random Search lobbies. That's always fun. I need the right equipment though, and I don't have the money for it.

  • I am not hyperactive enough to qualify for entertaining commentary. That said, I've been tempted by the thought several times.

  • I commentate as well, the materials aren't that hard to come by, I have Sony Vegas $60 (buy it instead of a game that you are iffy about), a $350 computer (relatively cheap by computer standards) Turtle beach X12's that I use for my xbox, and fraps (Can't remember the cost of that one). I have a whole 27 subscribers. (My videos are ok at best, still learning best way to record audio) My Channel

    • I did it. Had all the equipment i needed and recorded the gameplay while talking over it. I deleted the video a month later because it was just retardet. Doing a commentary is harder than you think. Now i'm only uploading single clips and mini edits of halo 3 to youtube

    • If you are going to do any commentary, learn from Game Grumps. PewDiePie uses the word "-blam!-" for insta-comedy, not an actual commentator. Just an idiot. Toby is pretty cool I guess.

Being honest here, I thought the title said "how many of you have thought about doing commander shepard?" Anyhwo, I thought about it then said, na. For one thing, now that people have figured out you can make money from youtube doing commentary, many, many people have jumped on the bandwagon, in an attempt to grab some of their own fame and money. At this point, they're a dime a dozen cancer infesting youtube. In order to succeed, you would have to have something about you, that could overcome the massess of other money grubbing fools, and get them to watch you instead. So in short, I shot that idea down out of the sky right away. Although, I would enjoy putting up a channel for SFM on youtube. I'm learning how to use it and have some interesting ideas. Assuming I can make ends meet, this may eventually become a reality.

    • I seriously have thought about it, but the games I would do it for I don't think would have a big following unfortunately. Which has definitely put me off of it.

    • Video Games? Maybe. Though I have thought of taking the same style and using in it in a couple of trail riding videos. Commentate put in after the ride of course. Stuff about how to handle obstacles similar to the ones in the video, such as hill climbs, trenchs, water crossings, oncoming traffic. That park where I ride has 200+ miles of trails, and is diverse enough to provide a variety of landscape.

I've thought about it, but decided against it for a couple of reasons. Monetary investment and the low chance of monetary return being the two largest reasons.

      • It's something I've always loved the idea of doing, but I lack the proper equipment to actually do it and uni will be taking up a lot of my time. I've always wanted to do a retro-replay series for older games, you never see as many of those on Youtubby.

      • I bought a $250 Happauge and downloaded a whole bunch of video editing stuff on my laptop, and used my beaches for commentary. I recorded 3 Halo Reach gameplays, and started a Lets Play of Metroid Prime. I eventually stopped though.

      • Mm, commentaries seem like fun things to do. BrainscratchComms are definitely my favorite commentary, despite them being relatively unknown.
