DU is a direct impact/kinetic energy projectile...it doesn't "melt" through armor. It uses it's mass/velocity to punch through. It's not a magic bullet and has obvious limitations. HEAT/EFP technology uses shaped charge/super heated molten metal to destroy armor.
There is a lot of wiki/Internet expertise bring spouted in here. Listen to military folks concerning munitions and their application.

Why did you dig up this old ass post? When you see a piece of steel that has been penetrated by any kind of AP, it sure looks melted to me. Regardless, we have rounds today that will penetrate heavy armor. So why people have a problem with AP rounds in the far future filled with alien tech is beyond me. Doesn't even matter now cause they nerfed the shit out of AP rounds.
