In middle school, now a few decades ago, I remember making a pinata. You start with a balloon and then plaster it. Have to think it's possible to incorporate multiple balloons to form a handle, stock, barrel and so forth. Then plaster it super thick so you could carve and etch out details, apply printed 2D graphics etc.
