Over these past few weeks, I've had the opportunity to complete the Crota raid with a couple of buddies of mine, just the three or four of us getting all three of our characters through the raid pretty easily on normal difficulty. Now at this point, most Destiny players have figured out the basics mechanics for beating Crota, or Atheon for that matter, but of course when we first delve into a raid for the first time, learning the timing and flow of the action, it takes a while to get everything locked down and familiar. This is why I have tried to find a way to motivate my team to learn the ropes of a raid faster.
Now as most of us have experienced in the raids, or in real life, yelling at your teammates to do something correctly will only work for so long before frustration, anger and eventually poisonous words are said to one another, leading the ending of friendships and animosity between players.
But on the other hand, simply being nice about the continuous failures and not acknowledging the problems within your raid group will never create a more cohesive team. Niceties don't motivate a fireteam enough, and strict yelling will eventually break one altogether. This is why I have found a happy medium that both motivates my team to be better at the raid and keep spirits high.
While this may not be guaranteed to work for every fireteam, I've found that if you are in the company of good teammates, they will react accordingly and positively to this method.
So as you begin the Crota raid, or are just at end, prepared to take him down, I would suggest having a laptop or mobile device with an internet connection nearby so as you can have the resources of the World Wide Web at your disposal. Next, you will look up the site wittipedia.com to gain all of you material to use in the raid.
Now here's the tricky part, that will require great timing and precise knowledge of the current emotional state of your fireteam. Since you are most likely teaching them how to do the raid for the first time, there are bound to be numerous errors and several wipes. This is where you implement the method.
After every wipe, you say either a cringe-filled pun or a bad joke.
Now I know this may seem ridiculous, but the first time I used this method, I saw immediate results. The first time we were fighting Crota, it must have taken us at least 20 tries with the three of us. Just death after death after death. I told so many bad jokes over the course of those few hours that even I began to hate them with a vengeance and after every wipe, I would slightly hate myself for the joke I was about to tell. But you know what, it paid off in the end.
The next time we did the raid, we finished every part in one attempt, even beating Crota with some well placed sword hits and a lucky shot. After hours of groaning at puns and dad jokes, we had the movements locked down and timed perfectly, barely missing a best and making the raid just another weekly activity to complete.
After just one implementation of this cheesy method, I was able to not only push my team to be better, but also make them have a hilarious and enjoyable time in the process.
When we face future raid bosses, I will be able to quickly motivate my team to perfect their movements and timing so that we can beat the bosses in a matter of no time. In any raid thrown at us, we'll be the ones with the last laugh.
I hope you all implement this method in future raids, strikes or even Crucible.
