The RNG is rigged, like a Vegas a lot machine. How exactly? It's quite simple...and ingenious. When you begin Destiny, you character has an equal chance to find any exotic weapon. Once you get lucky enough to find one (any exotic-it doesn't matter which), your chances to find that exact same exotic increase. This has the direct effect of making it harder and harder to find exotics you don't already have, therefore the longer you play, the less chance you have to find the exotic you're missing because the chances are so low becuase by then, you've found 12 SUROS, 15 Truth, 10 Ice Breaker, and so many Vex's they just go straight to postmaster. This is why your friend who has Gjallarhorn will find it so many times, sharding it right in front of you, while you in turn, shard that beautiful SUROS he wants so bad and can't find. Destiny's RNG makes sense if player trading or gambling was included, but they cut those features because 10 year olds.

  • You have zero evidence of this. I've barely gotten multiples of any exotic. In fact, the only duplicates I've gotten are two Patience and Time and three Vex. The Vex doesn't even really count because it's the only exotic that you can actually grind for. It only drops from a specific encounter. People get multiple drops because they have three characters and they play too much.

That's because you haven't played as long nor done as many raids-so your sample size is smaller (you've done less than half the raids I've done, pulled your profile.) Play as long as I have young padawan and the truth, you will see. I didn't start to notice it till after 4 or 5 months, because the exotic drop rate is still relatively low, but it will soon become apparent, don't worry.

  • Wow, you get more duplicates because you play more? Gee I wonder why? Can you even read? I already said you have more duplicates because you play more... Your idea is still lacking any evidence other than "my friend really wants this gun but never gets it."

It's just a coincidence that my entire clan has equally opposite exotic duplicates. Yep. Sorry, don't believe it. Simple probability statistics will reveal that if exotic drop rates were truly randomized, it would be extremely improbable that a player wouldn't have all the RNG exotics after X play time. BUT that isn't how it works in this game. The RNG is either influenced by external factors, or certain items are assigned much lower certainty than others, my best guess is it's both. If drop rates were truly randomized, it would be extremely unlikely that myself, and others would receive so many duplicates of singular items we were lucky enough to find in the first place. Finish high school, take a stats course in college, then come talk to me. Because that's all RNG is, pure statistics and probability. Now it's still possible, with probability, to have an outlier scenario, but my situation is also similar to anyone who have played since the Alpha last year. The problem is, there just aren't enough Exotics in the game. With so few to find, Bungie did what they did to prevent everyone from finding them quickly, but allowing all the exotics to appear in the game, it makes perfect sense.

  • You are truly showing your ignorance now.. "Truly randomized" does not mean you get something different each time. You ABSOLUTELY would expect duplicates in a random system. Now, I agree some items might be weighted. That's still random, though. However, your notion that the game purposefully locks you out of the gun you are wanting is absurd. You have just as much of a chance of getting an Ice Breaker out of the Gorgon chest as you had the last time you looted the Gorgon chest. I've already had my statistics course in college - years ago. Have you, kid? Because it doesn't sound like it.

  • No, truly randomized means you have an equally probable occurrence from each item in the sequence. My gripe isn't that I get duplicates, those are expected-its that Destiny does not have an equally probable RNG loot system for all the exotics, that makes frustration, especially after you play for awhile, trust me, you'll find the exact same subset of duplicates after you hit a certain point.

  • That is not the definition of random. Never has, never will be. If I put 8 red marbles in a bag and 4 blue ones, you're more likely to draw a red one but your blind choice is still random.

  • Right, but now you're talking about the probability of getting a certain item-in that case you have sequence S={R,R,R,R,R,R,R,R,B,B,B,B}, with Random(S) there's an equally probable chance to select any single item from the sequence. In this case the probability to get Red is twice that of blue. But that's different, that's the probability, or in this case the drop rate, which is usually assumed to be given...that's what I'm basing my tin foil hat theory on, that the probability is not the same for each exotic, thus when Bungie says "it's randomized", they're not lying, just withholding how it works.

  • Exactly. The more exotics you get, the less chance you have of obtaining the ones you don't. It's simple. Gambling wasn't removed, the whole RNG system is a gamble. Every single time you play Destiny, you're gambling. Trading was removed because there isn't enough items to support it. Everyone would have everything they wanted in no time, and then one of the main motivations to even play this game is gone. Also, no one wants a situation where people just pay some guy real cash to get all the gear. You would literally have people with everything and only 10 hours played. It would most definitely ruin the game.

  • The only exotics I ever get are the Ice breaker, no land beyond and the last word.
