I Just Noticed, in Ishtar Academy... [Hey, Look - No Hands! Thread]

So, the mission, "The Archive" - when you have to go into the Ishtar academy to secure data and Grayliks infiltrates, leading to a fight. You pass some skeletons when you initially enter the doors - the ones locked with the Radial A encryption, remember? Well, years of Fallout have taught me to pay attention to the objects, particularly skeletons, that are placed in a scene, because they often tell a story. The particular story here I wasn't sure about - there are some skeletons strewn about, one looks like the decedent was sitting at the time, another couple are entwined on the floor, another lies clean, facing upward to the ceiling. I figured they might be research crew or engineers or some such, locked in there when The Golden Age collapsed suddenly around them. But then I noticed none of them have hands or feet. That would paint a far more grisly picture, but I'm having trouble putting together a plausible narrative. If the archive were infiltrated, why not just kill them? Clearly they had time to themselves after being maimed, left to bleed out. It's unlikely they did this to themselves, since one would expect a tool nearby and at least one hand among them. Or, ya know, someone was a little sloppy with the geometry assets and just forgot to toss some hands and feet in there. But I like to think this was intentional. Any ideas?

  • The skeletons are just aesthetic. What one needs to pay attention to, in The Archive mission, is, "Hello, Dr. Shin." What, did a computer mistaken your appearance to be that of a doctor? Obviously not. Dinklebot hacked the door, so you aren't being addressed according to a stolen access code attached to a particular individual and you never identify yourself - ever. Is Dinklebot really that convincing when he tells you to "ignore that"?

          • That's the pile of skeletons Bungie's lazy weapon designers used to create the Crota raid guns.

          • Another few things to note is the archive and library both have markings similar to the "Mark of The Hidden" that Eris and Ikora use as their "secret" group of Guardians. Doing the jobs that the other members of the tower deem either crazy, to dangerous, or betraying the sanctuary which the traveler has made for us. What that might mean I'm not sure but several people have been trying to put more meat on the bare bones of the story we're given.

          • I think this is the most interesting mission in the game when you enter the library your fretted with the ai calling you doctor sjin and dinklebot questions this. Are you doctor sjin? If not why does it call you that? If this was just caused by dinklebot needing authorisation does that mean he does this for all the doors pretends your fallen, cabal etc.

          • Thay group I presume is the team doing the vex research in the grimoire. Dr Shim and a couple of others. Two of them are referenced as being lovers. My presumption is that they looked into the mind of a vex, went mad and locked themselves in the archive to die from inaction. If you read the cards they talk about how they can't figure out if they are real or not. Dunno where the hands and feet come into it.

          • Not a single Skeleton ion Destiny has Hand or feet. You will find a lot of bones, but no Hands nor feets yet. I guess ist because the Artist responsible didnt know how to do hands nor feet. Personal opinion

            • Well considering it's been thousands of years since the collapse, maybe the bones just rotted to dust.

Not sure, I was looking at the guy on the chair at the end of The Last Array. He is missing his feet and lower arms. He also has 20 ribs... Some above his collarbone. My girlfriend informed me that is a thing. A "cervical" rib.

            • Okay yeah. I saw this when I first got to Venus. Hands and feet are the first things people eat when in situations of cannibalism. the one leaning up against the wall died last because he still had enough stamina to stay standing the other times of death range with the first definitly being the pile of bones in the corners and near by those 5. they had drawn straws. as food diminished the old, then the weak became the food with those last few dying out around the same time refusing to finish each other off. maybe it was the madness of it all or maybe they went back to far as friends to do that to each other. I think hunger would conquer friendship so they probably all agreed that this was the end and there was no point in continuing this futile effort. the lovers died together as the other two simply couldn't keep up the strength to stand with the last guy looking up toward the sky as if to ask the god they would soon meet.......why?

              • I think it is most likely that the hands and feet were intentionally skipped in the design, simply because of the difficulty in rendering them on a 'realistic' level. Also, the bones in the hands and feet are very small, and often carried off by scavengers. So, finding a skeleton with no hands or feet, or with seemingly damaged hands or feet, is common. Though a skeleton that magically holds together after all flesh, muscles and ligaments have decayed would be very odd.

                • In the area you fight Crota, there's random groups of skeletons strewn about. I always wondered who they were. I mean, how many guardians went up against crota in his chambers? I could be wrong, but from what I know, not many. I don't know man,...I just don't know. I feel the op though, so many times through the same instances and you start noticing things you ran past initially; almost like watching a movie for the second time, you know?

                • Maybe hand and foot prints were needed to open the door so the skeletons were people with access so they disposed of their hands and feet
