rng madness

I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar crazy experience with rewards like what just happened to me. I've got about 100 hours into the game, all same character, and I've never been rewarded an exotic (haven't done raids), nor have I ever had enough strange coins when xur had something good. Until today. I bought the icebreaker. To christen my first exotic I loaded up the weekly heroic. (Side note: the gun is friggin awesome) After I finished the strike I was awarded a legendary engram so I went straight to the cryptarch and started turning in the many blues I collected in the strike. Then when the purple was approaching my mind was racing with all the stuff I hoped it could possibly be and sure enough, I clicked on the legendary and I see YELLOW!!! Words can't really describe the excitement that brings. Then a split second later when I saw what it was my heart sank a little. It was the icebreaker. The very same exotic I had just purchased. What?!?! I mean, to have a purple yield an exotic is rare enough, and then to have that exotic be the very same one you just bought an hour earlier?? Crazy I tell you. Crazy. So, anyone else? I hear similar-ish stories, such as being rewarded the same exotic 2 times in a row, but I thought this one was extra crazy so wanted to hear everyone else's stories too.

  • Incidents like these, I think, go a certain way to explaining a number of things: 1) the incidence of exotic rewards (engrams or drops) is governed by the same measure of probability; 2) the incidence of exotic rewards does not take into account the type of reward given; 3) the incidence of exotic rewards is independent of purchasing them via Xur; and 4) the incidence of exotic rewards may be deterministic in that your probability of getting an exotic reward is weighted - that once you're rewarded with one, your overall probability drops (but increases/grows according to a number of different factors). With points two and three in mind, I think that helps to explain why you managed to get an Icebreaker soon after you purchased one. A similar incident has happened with me, too. After a Nightfall I was given a No Land Beyond and the week after I was given it again. Also, quick reminder since people may misinterpret this, the ninja badge doesn't mean I work at Bungie, nor does it mean I have any involvement with the game.
