The problem isn't the game, the problem is the mentality of this generation's gamers. They don't want an enjoyable experience, they want an unhealthy addiction. If you feel like you NEED to do something every single night for 5 months even when you're not enjoying it that's a serious behavioral problem. The article is talking about not enough 'carrots' referring to a carrot on a stick, a reward you keep working towards while it's held slightly out of reach. That is NOT an enjoyable experience, but modern gamers have been trained to NEED it. Long gone are the days of Super Mario or Tetris (a game that literally never even ended. No end, no reward, just harder and harder stages) where the experience was the reward, now you've been trained to do something you hate out of the slim chance that you'll get a trinket that triggers a dopamine release so you think you did something good. Good job, you've gained a literal addiction and lash out when it's not giving you a bigger and bigger high fast enough to compensate for tolerance. The author of this article is literally addicted as are many players here. That's why those people raging and claiming they'll quit never do. They're lashing out because they're in withdrawal.

  • I'm 34. on the cusp of both generations. i don't feel entitled. i do believe the generation below me is an entitled bunch, stemming from too many participation awards and games where everyone wins. i am disappointed in the game. I acknowledge the addictive nature of games like this, but fortunately I don't have a problem with addiction. im almost done with this game because i feel increasingly frustrated with the reward. i played the hell out of Mario. but i didn't play that game expecting any reward. this game has a reward system built in. but when that reward system seems broken, then the excitement to play starts to wane. I've been neglecting my literary passion while playing this game. I think it's time I returned to reading.

  • I believe that is the problem with the game. It's completely focused on the reward. It's found a way to make content and story unimportant. The reward system that exists is the only focus of everyone, myself included. After HoW if this system is not changed I cannot keep playing. It is unhealthy and the game is just a giant (albeit fun) hamster wheel. And I think it's time for this hamster to get off.

  • Hey, where'd you get that soapbox? Get down from there. I think you're right, in a way. But it's not necessarily that new gamers have been trained to want addictive experiences, but more so that Destiny is designed to be incredibly addictive. It's structured to keep us playing. By design.

  • This. I'm sure you've seen the article but look up Skinner box if you haven't. This game is a prime example of one.

  • Yeah, man. It's a shame the structure of the game encourages grinding to the extent that it does. Once the grind wears thin, the game doesn't offer any novel unstructured activities or modifiers to keep just playing the base game (shooting things and space magic) fun. I do like cheese though. Actual cheese.

  • Problem is certainly the exact opposite, Bungie FAILED to make the game addictive, as vast numbers have already quit. And games can easily be very enjoyable while providing the need for a feel of constant progression, something Bungie doesn't offer. WoW offers that. Borderlands. Skyrim. Heck, Battlefield series is better at it. I quit playing when Dying Light was released. Crossing fingers The Division won't pull a Bungie.

  • Vast numbers have quit? I assume you have server statistics to back that up since your claims don't match the official numbers.

  • I can take one look at my friends list which used to have 60-70 daily destiny players and is now down to 10 AT BEST. My clan forums used to have 20-30 posts a day. Now only a handful a week.

Lol match official numbers? You mean the ones they conveniently stopped reporting? They haven't released how many different players are still active for months. You know, just like all developers do when it starts going downhill fast.

  • This...Bungie took the primary elements that cause gambling and or herion addictions and utilized them in the game's reward system. Now we have a bunch of angry junkies whose grandiose expectations have them clamoring for more but sadly the dealer (Bungie) has stopped answering his phone.
