Kotaku sums up Destiny player burn-out

http://kotaku.com/five-months-in-hardcore-destiny-players-are-hitting-a-1684813586 This is not a bash. It comes from someone who, like many of us, really likes Destiny but is reaching a point of burn-out. The things that popped out to me are the lack of carrots and poor communication from Bungie. If you trawl the forums, you'll find many threads dedicated to each point made, but this is a handy summation of the frustration hardcore Destiny players are, and have been, facing of late. I'm no hater, and like Kirk, the article's author, I know there's an unbelievable game inside Destiny. I'm looking forward to HoW, but until then, it'll just have to be a strike now and again. Edit 1: You guys all rock. It's been a very clear-headed conversation in here so far, aside from some weak trolls. And thanks for the bumps! I think it's good to read what a lot of us have been thinking. Edit 2: I'm pretty sure the forum ninjas have buried any Kotaku-related posts so they don't trend. That's their prerogative, and somewhat understandable despite the normal levels of vitriol you can generally find on these forums. Feel free to bump if you think others should read it but, after over twenty-four hours of pretty constant replies from you crazy, magnificent bastards, it's fair to say that we don't need an article to spur healthy discussion about one of our favorite games.
You guys are -blam!-ing killing my phone.
• I've never been in greater agreement with reviews than I have been with Destiny reviews. I think it's because they're all rooted in the same fundamental failures of the game that merely manifest themselves over different horizons for folks. It's not some opinion, preference based interpretation of the game's mechanics and touch points. It's a factual representation of how there's this massive disconnect between what Destiny desires to be and how it gets there, and how that disconnect flies in the face of basic human feedback patterns.

    • 100% agree with the article. Up until this week, our small clan would have 10-12 concurrent folks online all day on Tuesday's. This week, it's been 2-3. A few of us dumb die-hard's are still doing nightfall's and weekly's. I have 3 Level 32's and today I got 8 ascendant shards to go with the hundred, almost 200, I already don't use. Then I got my 3rd copy of the same old legendary sniper and my 4th or 5th NITC from my 3 nightfall's. Last week when Xur didn't sell heavy I quit playing for 4 days. I am sick and tired of grinding glimmer to buy heavy. I am sooooo done with that. I've gotten 5 swordbreaker's and no sniper or rocket launcher from normal Crota. I've had better luck on hard mode weapons. I have plenty of exotic armor for my hunter, warlock and titan, but I haven't had a raid helm fall since I was level 30 so I can't use any of it. I've got everything you can get from VoG. Lately I've played for friendship only but my clan friends are quickly going elsewhere. I've spent most of this evening trying to decide which new game to order to get out of this rut. I am so burned out with this game and so disappointed with how Bungie has allowed a super-buggy Crota hard mode to continue to constantly ruin devoted players game time. I wish I had a dollar for every missing sword I've not seen.

      • Hit the nail on the head. I plan on sticking around until HoW and then it's getting deleted off my HDD. I figure once I play the HoW content I would've gotten my monies worth.

      • I deleted all my characters and all my gear and uninstalled the game from my PS4 about 4 days ago. I figured today I'd get back on to the forums just for fun to see what the reset NF and weekly is (not that I could participate with all my loot and characters gone lol). I saw this post and I decided to read the kotaku.com post. For me... this is why I left Destiny... this is a quote from the kotaku.com post: "Oh, shit, I've started playing Destiny for the wrong reasons. In the past, I used to hassle Jason when he'd say there was "no reason" to do some mission or other. What he meant was, there's no useful loot we can get out of it. He was working under the assumption that we only play Destiny for the loot. "But it'll be fun!" I'd counter. This game is, after all, fundamentally very fun to play. Surely that's enough? Lately, my mentality has changed. I find myself performing cold mental calculations to determine the worth-itness of a given undertaking. I always did that, mind you, but nowadays, it's my primary calculation, rather than a secondary one." When I started making those "worth-itness" calculations a couple weeks ago... I started to realize I was done with this game. It was very fun while it lasted though... and for several months... Destiny was one of my all-time favorite (or at least obsessive) gaming experiences. GG Destiny. And good luck to all the other Guardians still trudging onward. I wish you all the best!

        • Agreed. I love the game. Played a many hours here, but I'm running out if steam, and with another two or more month between our next expansion, I know I won't make it that long. I'll be on for the reset, and on for some raids with buddies, but otherwise I'll be putting it back on the shelf for a little. It's losing me slowly.

Totally agree with the article. These issues are things that bungie can fix, but they are too LAZY to do it. I know that things take time to fix, however I feel that bungie ignores these issue, and believes that the game is perfect as it is.....is not. Bungie NEEDS to address these issues, otherwise the future of the destiny franchise is going to be in jeopardy!! I am going to play the HOW, however I will be very cautious going forward.

Pretty much sums it up, wish Bungie could peek out of their tower and realize this is how most of us feel.

            • The problem is hardcore players don't have a goal anymore. Once your a level 32 and have all the weapons you want there is very little motivation to play. I used to be a huge Warhawk player on the ps3. It took an insane amount of time to get to general I spent at least 1200 hours in Warhawk and loved every minute of it. Once I got to my goal of getting to general it was like it is now on destiny. No more motivation. Both games are still fun to play every now and then but not like when you had a goal to capture.

              • O wow. He pretty much covered everything I feel. I too am one of those day 1 players chasing my Gjallarhorn and Saint 14. I started as and main a titan. Xur always sucks. Nightfalls haven't been fruitful in months. I've been slowly tapering off, playing less and less. They patch everything that's beneficial to players progressing (loot caves, cheeses, soloable nightfalls) and leave things that are broken and mess up the experiences (broken vog portals anyone?). The Vex pvp nerf was needed but should have been left alone for pvers. Now they are making other guns worse to make pulse rifles seem better. Time for a break.

I must say, only reason I played today was because it was reset day and friend was over who needed some runs done whom never plays. .... Looking to move to ffxiv a realm reborn soon I think. I only like having 1 character build game and 1 duke it out level playing field game at a time and destiny had the opportunity to be both but half my playtime is me going "it will get better, it will get better"

                      • I have to agree with this post, just lost 35 mins of my life in nightfall because one of us made a mistake. It wouldn't be so bad if we had not already played that content over and over. It's just not fun anymore.

                        • I really like the feel of this game, and I REALLY wish I had more reasons to use my awesome weapons and gaming abilities. However, I'm stuck to only doing PvE activities once a week (Nightfalls, Weeklies, Raids) wondering why I even do it, and then the rest of the time I just play PvP or nothing at all. And it SUCKS. I really wish I had more reason to play! The variety of bounties are very small, and incredibly tedious that I don't even do them anymore even if it actually benefits me. A lot of people have their reasons to quit, but there's one that literally forces people who love this game (like me) to stop playing entirely and that's because there is just nothing I can do!

                        • Agreed same 5 strikes/night falls ... All weapons besides black hammer after beating Crota 3 times a week ... What's the point? And HOW . Lol 1 raid 1 strike ... What's the point?

                        • I think the article is great. It sums up everything I've felt for probably a solid month or more. I think it tries to go into it but not deep enough though. The fundamental problem with this game is that it is solely focused around gear (weapons included). It's not focused on the story, fun or raid content, it's focused on gear (the carrot). Once you get the carrot, the experience is over. As opposed to the carrot augmenting the experience. It's probably too late to get the toothpaste back into the container, but I believe the only way to fix the overall issues with this game is to first shift the focus of the game back to where it should have been in the first place, everything but the gear. This way players will want to play for the pure enjoyment of playing. Not for the purpose of getting the carrot.

                          • I haven't touched Destiny since the weekly update for the exact reasons I just read. It was very discouraging to read about nerfs of our favorite weapons and delay of HoW. That article describes exactly what pushed me to the point of not playing this game anymore. The game is more of chore than a fun gaming experience.

                            • After a while, the rewards don't match the time invested, which is why I don't grind. Instead, I play it in moderation; a nightfall today, a weekly tomorrow, a raid on Saturday, you get the point. It's more fun that way, and I have time for other things; like a night out with friends, or a movie with my wife.
