Kotaku sums up Destiny player burn-out

http://kotaku.com/five-months-in-hardcore-destiny-players-are-hitting-a-1684813586 This is not a bash. It comes from someone who, like many of us, really likes Destiny but is reaching a point of burn-out. The things that popped out to me are the lack of carrots and poor communication from Bungie. If you trawl the forums, you'll find many threads dedicated to each point made, but this is a handy summation of the frustration hardcore Destiny players are, and have been, facing of late. I'm no hater, and like Kirk, the article's author, I know there's an unbelievable game inside Destiny. I'm looking forward to HoW, but until then, it'll just have to be a strike now and again. Edit 1: You guys all rock. It's been a very clear-headed conversation in here so far, aside from some weak trolls. And thanks for the bumps! I think it's good to read what a lot of us have been thinking. Edit 2: I'm pretty sure the forum ninjas have buried any Kotaku-related posts so they don't trend. That's their prerogative, and somewhat understandable despite the normal levels of vitriol you can generally find on these forums. Feel free to bump if you think others should read it but, after over twenty-four hours of pretty constant replies from you crazy, magnificent bastards, it's fair to say that we don't need an article to spur healthy discussion about one of our favorite games.
You guys are -blam!-ing killing my phone.
• The only real problem destiny has is a lack of content. When you can beat new content the day it's released how long will it take to get what you need and be bored. HOW needs to be released now not in April or may. Or just add some new events no more iron banner though.

  • Exactly how I feel. The no heavy ammo for the fourth week in a row was the straw that broke the camel's back. Love this game, but Bungie's consistent inability to address actual player concerns (heavy ammo bug, raid glitches, etc) and waste their time on fixes no one even asked for (the new weapon tuning update) has forced me to just stop the nonsense for a while. I'll get on for the weekly resets, but thats about it. I don't mean to bitch but coming from someone who has more than 400 hours in the game, it really seems like they don't care. If they did they would IMMEDIATELY make sure Xur sells heavy ammo and at the very least post actual updates on their own website and not some random game forum elsewhere.

  • This is exactly how I feel, I helped my case out a bit the other day. I have had 3 warlocks since the start, I deleted one of them an made a hunter. It has given me something to do at least for a bit. Definitely better then signing on for bounties everyday with my main. Doing this I have made the raids relevant again for me as I need armor, I have 200 radiant shards so I figured why not.

That article was very good. Hit a bunch of points that I'm also feeling. The crazy thing about Destiny, is how fast the burn out hits. You start out playing the game and get things as you go along. It's fun and you enjoy it. By the end, there are only a couple things you really want and after you get them, there is no reason to keep playing. After devoting a bunch of time to a game it's strange to just hit a wall and not care anymore. The exotics from TDB and HOW are not better than some of the best vanilla stuff, so why bother? NLB is not even close to Ice Breaker and Dragons Breath (why is it solar? You already have solar and void launchers, maybe make it arc?) pales to Gjallarhorn, and the 4th Horseman is out since nobody uses shotguns. What's the point? Looking back, I feel kinda stupid for wasting so much time on this game. When time invested is not even close to rewards received, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. One that will linger and make me avoid any future Bungie products.

  • I'm pretty burned out on Destiny, but I'm not a 'hardcore player', and I can't really identify with those sentiments once the writer starts talking about raiding. I've played a few hours in the past week, week and a half: nobody I know seems to be playing, and I'm really only interested in upgrading my armor so my main can be 31 all the time. Destiny's progression is probably the most transparent attempt to waste the player's time that I've seen since I was playing Star Wars: the Old Republic. It's obnoxious, and without people to play with, it's gotten pretty boring.

  • I agree and disagree with some of those guy's thoughts, ultimately I don't think any game is truly worth playing unless it's fun just to play without getting anything for it, carrots are all well and good but any game that depends on them to keep people playing is a badly designed game. I think too much emphasis was placed on drops as a reward for doing things in this game, and since it's all RNG you're stuck with no clear path to obtaining any given item, which is really stupid. Everything doesn't need to be RNG, especially having Shaders be RNG is just messed up, people should be allowed to dress how they like just like pretty much any decent game made these days, but Bungie decided to go with RNG with Shaders and everything else for some -blam!-ed up reason, ensuring only that most people are deprived of the things they really want. Crucible in particular I enjoy, and the Raids I also enjoy playing just for fun without any drops as a carrot leading me forward. All the other PvE content is utterly boring and repetitive though, and I don't bother playing PvE anymore apart from the Weeklies and the Raids. They really need to address some of the finer points in this game like letting people dress how they want, Transmog options would be great, also they need to add shaders that don't look like they're from the reject pile and which aren't governed by RNG (Glowhoo is hideous, God of War is too bright, all the black-ish shaders have white highlights so aren't all black, etc). Also they need more PvE content that isn't so repetitive (more Raids and Strikes, I also wouldn't mind a game mode like Firefight Limited in Halo: Reach), and more Crucible content as well, including maps and new game modes (CTF, 6v6 Salvage, etc). And lastly I think they need more events (Iron Banner, Queen's Wrath etc., more Public Events would be nice too, especially more frequent occasions of enemies moving against each other) and various little features to keep things interesting and give this game more depth, mini-games in the tower or things like that. I do enjoy this game a lot, but it's frustrating to see it get so much right and still -blam!- up so many basic features, I feel like if they really tried Bungie could make this game amazing but they just aren't doing it for whatever reason. Whether by incompetence or laziness or both I don't know but it's -blam!-ed up, they need to get off their high horse, stop patting themselves on the back, get off their asses and fix their half-assed and broken game, before what merits it has are overshadowed by lackluster content and dreams of what this game might have been if they hadn't screwed up so many things.

I feel the whole "carrot" thing makes perfect sense, but misses the point, somewhat. The dangling carrot may be the promise of potential loot, but look further than the carrot. I looked beyond the carrot following my pitiful Nightfall rewards this week. I own every exotic weapon in the game aside from the Suros (through choice), the Necrochasm because of no Crux drop and the Thunderlord, which is the one weapon I've been hoping for since launch. Every week Nightfalls and Raids deny my hopes for the Thunderlord. Following this weeks Nightfalls and Crota's End normal and hard, still nothing. In my despair I was struck with realisation. What is the point in obtaining a Thunderlord? All I'm going to do with it is play all the same content over and over again, this time with no carrot at all. The point is, we need the carrot. Unfortunately for myself and no doubt countless others, we're quickly running out of carrots to chase.

  • The only fun I get in destiny anymore is playing crota hard. The banter of all the glitches and time wasted. I try to solo nightfall here and there. It's kind of depressing.

  • A very good article and well worth the read, he highlights and puts into perspective the things we all go through. I am at the same point where I've hit a wall and just playing for the sake of getting the last few remaining exotics by luck. I like his view on xur saying that we're disappointed easily as we've racked up most of the available exotics already.

2 weeks ago I hit 32 on all my characters. From then I played 1 crota hard and 3 normals (because normal is FUN), ofcourse I did Nightfall and weekly... No Vog because everybody wants to do it on hard and snipe the oracles and templar (boring as shit) Only thing that I want is HardLight and I coudn't get it from the start. and then i went for a crucible, and try to use the last word. And I gotta say The last word is pretty much my last word in Desitny

I had made a half hearted analogy on a different forum thread earlier this week but after reading the Kotaku article it does tend to fit the scenario rather aptly. Destiny for many of us had the same experience as picking up the Husk of the Pit weapon for the first time. Excitement of finally unleashing this weapon on the plethora of enemies that stood before it. Sure it wasn’t everything that we would have like from a weapon, somewhat underwhelming but the promise was there. If we kept with it we could improve the base weapon to new unknown potential. Through application of embalming orbs courtesy of the Dark Below, we took our husk of a game and upgraded it to the Ediolon Ally. Once again our faith was renewed, the once empty shell had new life breathed into it, the weapon was more bearable (slightly) and still held that notion of greater things to come from its potential. Its wielders once again captivated with its potential to become something even better kept many stalwart guardians on the verge of retirement, encouragement to continue the fight. We stand on the precipice of the weapons final evolution for many guardians, House of Wolves will provide the final crux to our weapon that is Destiny. Many of us have high expectations of what this Necrochasm of a game will offer. The hype that sustained the vast majority all this time is coming to a close, where words will no longer suffice. The weapon will need to blow everything away and make us feel truly legendary. There in lies the problem of Destiny, those who have the Necrochasm already know that it failed to live up to expectations. Yes there are those who will stand by it but for many guardians out there, it is reduced to nothing more than a mantle piece decoration to tell tales of “I once played with that weapon”. What’s more is the notion that with each “update” they seemingly kill off the desire of many more. The weapon and game already underwhelming will further receive a debuff because of that old phrase that goes hand in hand with great Destiny lines; “Its not how we intended you to play our game”. I don’t even have the time to explain the wave of negative emotions felt by many guardians out there. One phrase that Bungie should take to heart should be this one; “Do you intend for us to play your game much longer?” With the strength of upcoming game titles in 2015 around the same time they expect us to pay for comet and another season pass. This House of Wolves DLC has better take this Ediolon Ally of a game and upgrade it into a Gjallahorn if it expects continued investment in this franchise. I for one am finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a regular fire team as members lose the will to continue the fight and I am losing the will to constantly find new regular members.

    • Really good piece that hit on a lot of valid points on the current state of destiny and its dedicated player base. I myself am 'almost' at the point of hitting the wall. I have 2 characters 32 and 31 with almost all my gear maxed out. In a couple of weeks or less i plan to take a break, not begrudgingly but rather a welcome 'breather' from what has been a very fun experience for me. I plan to sink my teeth into a few other games which i have neglected to pick up due to my destiny itch constantly needing to be scratched. I will definitely be back once HoW drops but i just really hope that they make it a worthwhile experience which has learnt from their previous mistakes. fingers crossed.

    • I will stop the second I get that Vex, but for now, this isn't about gaming or fun. This has long become personal and if I ever meet a Bungie employee, I will slap him in the face. Not to hurt him and not to hard to cause any permanent damage, but just for sharing some of the pain Destiny gives me. I also say "Go -blam!- yourself, Bungie" and "You really screwed that one up", but I can't accept the fact, I just don't get that Vex. It's personal now and it will stay like that!
