Kotaku sums up Destiny player burn-out

http://kotaku.com/five-months-in-hardcore-destiny-players-are-hitting-a-1684813586 This is not a bash. It comes from someone who, like many of us, really likes Destiny but is reaching a point of burn-out. The things that popped out to me are the lack of carrots and poor communication from Bungie. If you trawl the forums, you'll find many threads dedicated to each point made, but this is a handy summation of the frustration hardcore Destiny players are, and have been, facing of late. I'm no hater, and like Kirk, the article's author, I know there's an unbelievable game inside Destiny. I'm looking forward to HoW, but until then, it'll just have to be a strike now and again. Edit 1: You guys all rock. It's been a very clear-headed conversation in here so far, aside from some weak trolls. And thanks for the bumps! I think it's good to read what a lot of us have been thinking. Edit 2: I'm pretty sure the forum ninjas have buried any Kotaku-related posts so they don't trend. That's their prerogative, and somewhat understandable despite the normal levels of vitriol you can generally find on these forums. Feel free to bump if you think others should read it but, after over twenty-four hours of pretty constant replies from you crazy, magnificent bastards, it's fair to say that we don't need an article to spur healthy discussion about one of our favorite games.
You guys are -blam!-ing killing my phone.
• Yup, I'm one of those players, all my characters are Level 32 and this is the first week since I started playing Destiny back in Sept that I haven't logged in to play on the weekly reset. I have no reason to login and play this game

  • I have put in 1000 hours on this game, true that it is super repetitive and grinding but I have played since launch and I intend to stay on this ride until it's over. Everytime I try to play another game it just doesn't feel right, im addicted to destiny and I love it. From helping nooblets out with their strikes and raids to playing with my friends that I have been with since launch. I will remain here and continue fighting the darkness with my fellow guardians, wether it will be on my titan or hunter, my love for this game and the experience of it will continue to grow. I look foward to fighting alongside all of you.

    • He's completely right, the loot system truly is dreadful, and I'm almost discouraged from playing by the fact that the next DLC will essentially reset any progress I make in the game.

I knew that feeling, it's like destiny punish you for playing the game. Last night I beat Crota end only to get 2 radiant shards. Like damn, I could have got at least 10 shards. They need to work in their loot system and make more than is set of max armor. Also created some new armor and weapons that aren't re skin version of old vendor items. Bring some new monsters to kill too.

sums up perfectly. theres absolutly no point in playing this game for 1 gun as we know the chances are low. and thanks to the community bungie wont sell the better guns. many glitches, lack of creativity and crap communication.

        • I think one big point that was missing in that article was bungie's attempts to slow down progression with radiant mats and vendor commendations are really annoying. Firstly, thanks for making my 300 and 400 ascendant energies and shards useless! And secondly, thanks for filling my inventory with more crap and not increasing vault space! I really want them to allow us to trade in ascendant mats for radiant mats. 10:1 sounds somewhat reasonable. My 400 ascendant becomes 40 radiant. I can handle that since they are 100% useless right now...

          • Been playing hardcore everyday since release, then around chrismas time I hit that wall and had to take a 2 month break. Played some other games then came back yesterday and actually had some fun lol. If you've hit that wall just take a break its natural then you'll come back and enjoy it again.

          • My clan decided we're going to do crota 2 days a week, sprinkle in nightfall, and then play evolve. Most of us have 400+ hours and are also tired of chasing the carrot. I have had two Monte Carlos and a hawkmoon drop in the last 2 weeks. Didn't have any before, but I don't really care either. Been chasing ghorn and coming up empty. Xur is a colossal disappointment and with no heavy ammo, no one's eager to wipe a bunch of times for loot we don't care for.

          • I agreed with most of his points even though I am not remotely burned out myself. His carrots analogy was a little broken. I think it's more accurate to say that the carrots themselves 1. are too few and 2. just become unappealing when you chase them for so long without any prospect of getting one. (Thanks, RNG.)

          • That article nails it. What particularly struck me was the section on carrots and xur. Like Kirk there are only a few exotics I still really want. Heart of the Praxic Fire, Mask of the Third Man, and Thunderlord. I also want fatebringer and some raid helmets on my titan and warlock. Those are all rng, and with the exotics especially I'm relegated to nightfall and xur every week with little chance of actually getting them, and that's definitely a contributing factor to my own burnout. I don't need rep anymore, I'm almost to where I don't need exp, and I can't really "earn" the things I want since I'm at the mercy of rng. Anyway, great article that really hit the nail on the head. Personally his feelings mirrored mine almost exactly.

          • This. Burnout is normal and to each his own. I briefly stated my feelings on the game's state several times in the forums and in a respectable manner. I then chose to stop playing and vote with my wallet. If you enjoy the game, good for you, honestly. For those of us who feel differently, we've made our individual choices. I don't plan on returning any time soon. But if changes haven't been made by the time HoW releases, and it's more of the same issues for TDB, then I will retire permanently. Again, not a threat and not a gripe. I'm just one player stating my own truth, and I'm fine with that. Happy hunting.

            • Nothing wrong with burning out this game after 5.5 months. I've played games for far less time and gotten burnt out. At least we can expect new content for this game sooner or later.

              • I completely agree. I was the game's biggest advocate among my friends and I find myself slowly stepping away. That's not to say it wasn't fun or even that I don't enjoy it now...I just don't enjoy it as much. For as much as I support the idea of communication, I feel like Bungie's method is (for the most part) failing at it. If they actually communicated better at the bugs they're fixing and additions that are actually coming (even if they are down the road), I think a lot of people would feel good about it. But having the updates be filled with anecdotes, cryptarch jokes, and uninformative Q&A....it just leaves the community feeling soured. Rather, they should be knocking out the issues that are well known and even documented in video by their players. This game could be mind-blowing...but it's just a fun romp at the moment. It saddens me that the issue has become such that entire articles are written about the game's short-comings and mishandling. People wonder why so many cheese strikes and raids...it's because people have gotten tired of grinding through but they still want to play with their friends and not be hassled by the bugs that can totally screw your team over. The rng does nothing but mock the inner-collector in those of us with that personality and even their fix on CE doesn't really work; I received 5 pairs of gloves before I got 1 pair of boots...it was supposed to give you something you didn't have (and I would've been fine even if it just increased chances everytime until you got it...but 5:1 is not good for something that was supposed to be fixed). The idea of Xur is fantastic, but that man should be traveling and have something truly exotic. Why doesn't the game give you exotics you don't already have via rng but Xur have items that are completely unique to him? I feel like I could go on, but I don't want to make this a rant. In truth, I really like the article but I am frustrated just as many others are. I think it's a sign of a good game when people just want more....but more also means the stuff we have should be fixed rather than tweaking things that don't need tweaked.

                • The only real problem destiny has is a lack of content. When you can beat new content the day it's released how long will it take to get what you need and be bored. HOW needs to be released now not in April or may. Or just add some new events no more iron banner though.
