Kotaku sums up Destiny player burn-out

http://kotaku.com/five-months-in-hardcore-destiny-players-are-hitting-a-1684813586 This is not a bash. It comes from someone who, like many of us, really likes Destiny but is reaching a point of burn-out. The things that popped out to me are the lack of carrots and poor communication from Bungie. If you trawl the forums, you'll find many threads dedicated to each point made, but this is a handy summation of the frustration hardcore Destiny players are, and have been, facing of late. I'm no hater, and like Kirk, the article's author, I know there's an unbelievable game inside Destiny. I'm looking forward to HoW, but until then, it'll just have to be a strike now and again. Edit 1: You guys all rock. It's been a very clear-headed conversation in here so far, aside from some weak trolls. And thanks for the bumps! I think it's good to read what a lot of us have been thinking. Edit 2: I'm pretty sure the forum ninjas have buried any Kotaku-related posts so they don't trend. That's their prerogative, and somewhat understandable despite the normal levels of vitriol you can generally find on these forums. Feel free to bump if you think others should read it but, after over twenty-four hours of pretty constant replies from you crazy, magnificent bastards, it's fair to say that we don't need an article to spur healthy discussion about one of our favorite games.
You guys are -blam!-ing killing my phone.
• Read it last night as it came across my FB feed. I think it hits the nail on the head. I hope Bungie listens.

  • For me I took a 2 week break from all raids and Nightfalls and I almost didn't come back, but then my wife and I decided that we would stay home on a Friday. We decided to run the nightfall and a buddy that we played with joined our game instantly and was excited to see we were on. We then remembered that to us the game was not about the activities or rewards or the battle with RNG, it was the friends we made along the way that were more important then anything Atheon or Crota could give us. We have been Xbox live members since 2002 and We still have communication with friends We made playing Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six 3. So for us the game always comes second to the friends, but the game must be fundamentally fun. Destiny is amazing and while individually RNG may screw us over its fun to see some one you love and care about be blessed with that shinny new piece of gear that always seems to drop their way. For me and my friends it fun to laugh at getting shards for clutching the kill on Atheon when my wife who got stuck behind on Venus because she missed the cleanse gets a GHorn. If you take this game to serious you might just forget to have fun along the way. Yes this game may get stale but don't be afraid to make some friends and help out newer players. Be the player that messages the the level 27 the day before to carry him through the nightfall back and help out you never know when RNGesus may smile upon you. Have fun guardians.

      • If they could improve their RNG system people would not complain so much. I mean RNG is the perfect choice for developer to extend the life of a video game, but bungie went overboard with. I think they should improve some aspect of RNG. Do not make every item achievable by RNG. For example, i consider ridiculous the fact that i got my first new monarchy faction shader at lv. 22 of that faction and my friend got the exact same shader when she reached lv. 8. I mean seriously RNG in a shader?? Bungie needs to start establishing requirements to specific items just like they did the exotic bounties. With current situation of Destiny the only way that bungie can make people keep grinding for items is setting some goals to achieve them. Bungie's mistake(although their minds were in the right place) was trying to make a game that tends to every type of player(hardcore/casuals) using the same loot system for both types.

        • Probably my favorite paragraph of the entire article..... "Meanwhile, Bungie continues to tweak and fine-tune their game, but they're changing things players don't want changed while leaving in things players hate. To put it another way: They're addressing and correcting bugs that favor players, while leaving in bugs that work against players. That approach is certainly not helped by the smarmy, "wink-wink, you know you love us" tone of the Bungie Weekly Update, which frequently shares a bushel of bad news while playfully punching us in the arm about it." But all of it's pretty spot-on.

          • Talking about Bungie making the carrot harder to get, I have done Crota on hard 8 times. He still didn't drop a single primary for me. Anyone experiencing the same string of bad luck?

            • Burn out is just an awkward phase that any game has to go through I think, it's just much harder to control and divert when the game has MMO qualities and a minimalistic approach to story content. I really like destiny, and I think that if Bungie listens to its players and decides to at least attempt to pull players deeper into the story, I'm sure that would combat plenty of burn-out.

                  • Good article. I think its normal to want to step away from the game for a bit, theres plenty of other awesome things to play, no need to be married to this game. Play it to play the game and have fun with friends :-)

                  • That author is my Destiny clone. I have had the exact same issues (5 No Land Beyonds and no Gjallarhorn, after 500+ hours of gameplay, but the similarities don't stop there and are too numerous to list). It's pretty much spot on though, and the exact same reasons why I plan to take a break for awhile too. I'm going to try some other games until HoW comes out. Hopefully this break will help me get over the frustrations of the RNG loot system, Xur, and "balancing", so that I can enjoy it more in a few months.

                  • If they make me upgrade all my weapons again I might stop playing. I still haven't finished upgrading all my weapons from when Crota was released. It's such a chore and not looking forward to it

                    • Echos my feelings almost exactly. I'm already at the point of just running nightfalls and crucibles for shits and gigs. The one weapon I want, hawkmoon, I have no reasonable chance of getting over anything else so I burned out grinding for it. Just waiting for house of wolves or until I have a good enough reason to play more.

                      • Haven't read the article but to be honest the way people consume games these days no wonder they burn out. I am not sure games companies can keep up unless they build sandbox type games possibly...sigh. If only...

                        • I would agree that the content is getting stale however I still enjoy playing Destiny. I find it is more of who I play with that makes the experience enjoyable. As long as my friends are playing and we are having fun I can wait for more content to be added.

                        • I think it's funny that Destiny gets criticism other games don't get. Why isn't there an article about Wolfenstein saying "well, players have played this game for 25 hours and are giving up due to a lack of new content and things to do." Instead, it's "I've put 800 hours into Destiny and I'm tired of playing." Like you can play any game for 800 hours and not get tired of it.....

I actually bought D3 for console just this past Saturday to change things up a bit. The difference in the two reward systems is astounding, although I already knew this as I originally played it on PC. Honestly, Destiny NEEDS more moments like this (see above gif).
