Both ghost shells and class items giving a bonus is a great idea. Even if it isnt a perk affecting damage or defense, boosts to stats, intell disp strength, would be a huge upgrade. Even if it was 5-10 points still makes them more useful than they are now. I mean how long did bungie expect us to care about class items that barely make a cosmetic change. At least this is an incentive to seek out different ones.

Good point, I never considered the obvious simple solution: stats. Simple stat boosts can help top up, especially when gear has such fixed stats blended with necessary perks (raid gear comes to mind). This would allow players to lean toward a given stat preference, and not have to give up using their raid gear.
