Ways to Encourage Mic Use in Destiny

One of the things that made World of Warcraft rise above the others was the sense of community and fellowship the game brought out in its players -- very, very few online games succeed at getting players to chat with one another. How did it do this? I'm not entirely sure. There's a formula for building a webcomic community: Make a remarkable product ---> put it out there for free ---> people will read it and share it ---> after they've read it long enough, they'll be wanting more despite a lack of there being more ---> so they'll start reading the creators blog ---> and eventually, as the IP becomes more representative of their values and personal identity, they'll start talking to each other -- other fans, in forums or otherwise. Well it's something like that -- essentially, "if it's really awesome enough, people will eventually start using mics more" is the gist. Okay, and Destiny is awesome (I've tasted the Alpha) but I still think there must be more the game could do to encourage mic use. I think WoW's server-wide chat of people trading/talking on General Chat, and etc, helped encourage more intermingling by showing the players others ("first adaptors" let's say) were doing it easily without awkward penalty. So...I think maybe...Bungie should try incorporating a "server" (whatever that means in Destiny's case) wide mic chat -- especially in the tower at least...! No, it would be set to "off" automatically, but it WOULD show up on the interface, and beckon you to switch it on and see what it's all about, after you've played Destiny to the brim, and wanted more. What do you guys think? Not enough people are using Mics in the Alpha! I know there aren't a billion people playing the Alpha, but come on!

  • There's also always giving players a small EXP boost for playing with a mic -- whether used or not. Once players end up using mics, they'd be easily encouraged by the "first adaptors" who also have mics and like talking to talk as well.
