Imagine a world where…
Please stick around to read the wall of text.
Imagine a world where every person had a number value floating above them, attached to their persona. It doesn't have to be a physical object, just a value that everybody can see. This value is calculated based on a combination of your skills, talents and qualities. Everything would be accounted for, and the calculation is somehow perfect. Call this a 'rating', if you will. The higher the number, the 'better' the general quality of the person, everything taken into account. For kids still maturing, this value would be adjusted to be somewhat based on potential as well.
Now, for the questions.
How high do you think your number would be?
How do you imagine this would affect the way people treat each other?
How do you think it would change how people choose their partners?
Would this be a blessing or a horrible, horrible thing?
I'd like your opinions and any sort of inputs from you guys. This is just something I thought about one evening.

That'd be... yet another thing that makes it easier to pass judgements on others, and I don't think anyone is as simple as a number.

1 ReplyEh. An aggregate would be too broad to really be taken fairly. For example, someone with the intellect of Steven Hawking would almost guaranteedly have a high rating. Meanwhile, if he was a total dick in real life, his rating would take a hit but would it be enough of one to make other people aware enough ahead of time. And then take it vice versa. If a guy was dumb as a stump, but the nicest guy you would ever meet, would you ever know it because you passed by his score without a thought? If there were ranks based on several key areas (intellect, athleticism, personality) I think it would be a bit fair. But then unless there's an upper limit (say everyone is on a scale of 1-100) everything could be rather arbitrary because there isn't a solid ceiling. I can also picture this going wrong if people could figure out their own rankings. You know how teenage girls starve themselves to be thin and "attractive" in high school? Imagine 80% of the species doing that for every category. And I wouldn't do well with it. Unless my ranking was in the top percent I would be pissed and focus on the ranking non stop until it was.

It's pretty similar to different races, and I think it would have a similar result. You can't judge a person on a single number alone the same way you can't judge a person on their race. It's a part of them, but that's not the only thing that defines you. If you get one number you have no idea where the data comes from. Is the guy terminally sick or a rapist? Interesting question though.

First glance judging would definitely become an even bigger problem. Just think of how that'd go in highschool. Friend groups would be decided by numbers instead how people actually feel. Teachers could decide which students they will and will not like right away and vice versa. Imagine walking around a huge city like Chicago or New York. I guess that would make an afternoon stroll a whole lot more interesting.

All the people with a low rating (around the age of 30 or so who know well enough by that point how to and that they should improve their value/rating - unless they have a severe illness, etc. effecting their value/rating- ) can be put on an island (their rating goes higher if they make it off the island proving themselves worthy or their rating stays the same if they find a way to live on the island or lowers if they die) which ultimately will greatly improve the gene pool. Edit: I just re-read that and wow! I'd love a delete button for these comments because I think I'm the new Hitler and want to delete this. :(

It would give humans a way of judging others at a first glance. It would cause separation amongst the entire human populace. Your number would become the only way to be socially acceptable. It would create fissures and cracks that spread throughout the entirety of human society. Segregation would be more prevalent than ever. War would erupt as people try to deny the number and turn against the segregation. They try to deny that something, somewhere knows what they are capable of and what they will become. The ultimate destruction of humanity would be caused by a number that determined your fate before you could determine it yourself. This is the ultimate fear of the human psyche. You are not an individual, you are a piece in a game where your actions, decisions, and intentions are all predetermined by something more powerful and beyond your control. To never have the freedom of choice is to never live.

4 RepliesI feel like the only flaw of this system is that it would adjust to one's potential right when they're born. So to the final value they will have, kind of. Just imagine being 5 years old and having a low value, that would be discouraging as hell.

Wonderful, another reason to discriminate against one another. I imagine this would create a caste system. As for what my value would be, I have no idea, especially considering there's no established standard/scale. Is this out of 100? Is the average 100? 1000?
