The Awoken: A sociological overview

From what we know grimoire, the Awoken in the Reef are the decedents of humans who had fled Earth during the Collapse, but can we find out anything else about that? If you seen the movie "2012" then we can get some ideas. In that movie, the world leaders find out the world will be flood in a year so they start the construction of 3 ships that would insure Humanities survival. However, the project was expensive so they have wealthy people from all over fund their project in exchange for a ticket on the ship. When the flood came, only the rich, the scientists, and the political leaders had survived. I imagine that the first Awoken were also rich merchants, scientist, and leaders. How did the Awoken survive so long in the Reef? Well it was already provided for them by their ancestors. Why does the Queen have a treasure room filled with gold. of all the things to bring to space, nothing is more useless than gold.
