Exotics

Is there much of a difference for which exotic to use? I have a helm and chest on my lock... would it just come down to stats and preference? I'm partial to switching from my chest to helm atm only because after tonight I should have all the vanguard rep I need to get exotic + 3 legendaries if I switch to the helm
