Dear Guardian, This Is Why You SHOULD NOT be Raiding.

Dear Guardian, As much as I like to help and encourage people I must stress a few reasons why you SHOULD NOT be taking part in a Raid on The Vault Of Glass. 1. You are below Rank 27. The lower your Rank, the less damage you can do. And I mean waayyyy less! At Rank 25 you are looking at a 43% reduction in damage output! 2. No Mic. You refuse to use your mic or you don't have one or people in your house are sleeping. For whatever reason, you are not on your mic. Communication is absolutely 100% critical in the VoG. Sometimes you even need to back out into Orbit to fully discuss and strategize. Impossible if you are not using your mic. 3. Party Chat. Even worse than not having a mic is not joining (or leaving) a Party Chat. The game volume is less loud when you are in a Party Chat , as opposed to in game chat, so its easier to communicate without everyone raising their voices over gun fights (i.e. the Destiny chat). If you are in the in game chat and we are in Party Chat then we can't hear you and you can't hear us! 4. Leadership Only one or two people should be giving out orders and instructions during critical moments and battles. Nobody else should speak over them except to call out things that change the game i.e. Relic, teleports, oracles, strong enemies, health, hazards, situation report, countdown (time's vengeance) etc. 5. Its not a Strike. People often start playing the VoG and within an hour they are saying that they have to leave for work or to sleep or eat or whatever else. Please don't start playing if you haven't got the time to spare. This isn't going to be done quickly unless YOU and YOUR WHOLE TEAM absolutely know what they are doing in the VoG. Every time someone leaves, that person has to be replaced. The new person has to be 'worked in' and that can take a while. If someone else leaves 30mins later and the pattern continues then you can see how things can drag out. Yes, we have a week to complete the VoG and there are checkpoints but that is besides the point. Think about how you are affecting the team. Don't just join to get that one chest and then leave. 6. Weapons, Supers, Builds & Perks Use what will benefit you and your team. This isn't the time to be using a weapon just because you like the look or sound of it. This isn't the time to be doing your bounties. This isn't where you level up your character. You are facing the Vex. They use purple shields. You need weapons and builds that maximise Void damage to break these shields. You need Titans who are using Defender. Hunters should be using Invisibility in the Gorgon's Labyrinth and Golden Gun during Boss fights and for Oracles. Warlocks can go either way. Customise your perks so that they help you and your team to get through. Don't be lazy. Don't be selfish. 7. Be patient with people. Not everyone knows the ins and outs of the VoG. Everyone on the team should be welcoming to someone who is new to it and take the time to explain things before and as they happen. Don't just kick someone because they got it wrong 5 times in a row. People won't begin to get better until they fully understand what is happening. There are different reasons why the whole team gets wiped. Explain them fully. If things are not going well its a good idea for everyone to regroup in Orbit, ask how everyone is feeling, try to give encouragement and keep morale up. Talk about where things are going well and where things need work. Restock on ammo at the Tower and maybe take a real life break for 5 mins before getting back into it. 8. But I was invited... Thats fine. If you find yourself in a fireteam of 6 and on route to Venus and you know that you haven't got time or that you are not ready, then please politely let the others know ASAP. That way you can get going to what you really want to do and the rest of the team can start looking for a replacement without anybody having their time wasted. You are helping the team out more by giving notice to leave right at the start. We've all been there. One minute you are doing your own thing then you get an invite to do something that you would rather not do at that time. Summary If you are unwilling to follow this advice then you are severely hindering your team's progression within the VoG. Please do the right thing and don't play unless you are willing to do your best to help everyone to get through it. I am writing this out of love. So that we can all benefit. Regards, A Thorny Guardian P.S. If you can think of more reasons why people shouldn't raid just yet, please say below but be constructive. Thanks in advance!

Some of these are valid points but the Raid isn't really that hard unless you have noobs. It could easily be beaten with no communication via matchmaking as long as everyone knows what they are doing. I do agree with the "if you don't have time one", that's annoying as hell.

AGREED. It now takes my crew around 45 mins to an hour to complete it.. that is now that we are all 29's working our way to 30. You can get away with having one or two.. maybe even 3 players level 26 or below.. and hell I completed it when I was 25 but I was the bitch portal runner and had to be kept alive by our dedicated Supplicant killers. Just rank up, get a mic.. ( if you dont' have a mic, you should never play a strat FPS/MMO ever.. and I mean ever!! and communicate.

    • I don't have a mic and it doesn't affect anything. I communicate by shaking my head and pointing.

          • While I agree with most of what you said, and the part I'm going to comment on I don't absolutely disagree with, the invisible hunters in the Gorgons lair. It's not really necessary. It takes about 30 seconds to get through there, let someone who knows the way lead is a more viable solution than stealth.

            • At first I thought it was going to be one of "those threads", but after reading your posting, as well as those who have posted a reply - I have to congratulate everyone and say thank you for a well thought out and constructive opinion. It sounds like you have a good deal of experience at running the raid and you have written out some really good advice. Not only have you captured some really good points, you actually take the time to explain why it matters and why it is important in helping to make a successful raid. Unfortunately, I'm probably one of a small majority of players that have not done the VoG for various reasons, but I do have to give you kudos for item # 7. I think that is probably some of the best advice that I've seen posted on the forums. When (and if) I ever get the opportunity to take on the raid, that I am able to find players like yourself that is willing to take the time and help the party succeed. One thing that I'm curious about, and if I may ask - why did you not mention anything about understanding your role in the party? The only reason why I ask is because I've seen countless posting that talking about knowing how to play your role on the team. I tend to play more of a supportive role, but I'm not afraid to jump into the fray when and where I'm needed. Again, thank you for a great topic and thank you for presenting your thoughts in a clear and level headed manner. We as a community need more threads like this one.

              • First off its not a public search gametype like the strikes or crucible. So you need to create a group of your own that all players have mics and that are high levels. That is the most logical way of getting a great raiding fireteam. By getting people you know that are high levels with great gear or really high levels strangers with mics and NOT by inviting completely random people that are level 20 with no mics. Make a plan then go pursue it. No plan=failure

The raids are the best part of this game. They need to make a raid DLC with about 10 more raids.

                • This is good stuff and what many are overlooking, just general good advice to be ready for the raid. Can you go below 26? Sure, damage will be reduced by a lot. When I was in a raid a little bit ago, I was not going to play past a certain time and gave my group many reminders...which they chose to ignore. So when time was up, I left.

                • Void damage is nice, one exception though, Gjallahorn. If you have this, forsake all other rocket launchers.

                  • IMHO, the biggest issue between players in the VoG is poor communication. Everyone needs to recognize that although there may be groups that can kill Atheon in a couple of turns, or can easily kill the Templar without him teleporting, not many people who play can or have done it. So, when you get in a random group (via here or Destinylfg.com) don't expect perfection and a short raid. You may have made 10+ raids and it's easy for you, average players have done it 2 or 3 times. It's tiring to hear players shouting and cursing and then rage quitting because not everyone is perfect. Or, more common, is that teams need to realize that the Atheon encounter is one of those few game bosses that everything can be going as planned, and then someone gets glitched (or blind sided by a supplicant) and things can start to go sour. In these situations, it's important that people remain calm. This encounter is very unpolished in some aspects and can fail you at any time. But it can be finished with 4 people so long as the relic holder doesn't die with the relic. Even if you wipe a lot as a team, don't be mad. Talk about what's going wrong calmly and see what can be improved upon.

                    • I would put "Don't bother trying this without a good team that knows one another's strengths and weaknesses" on that list, at the top. That more than anything can compensate for the rest; communication especially. There's no way in the universe I'd do a raid with strangers. A lot of people want matchmaking added to the raids but I can almost gurantee those groups would fail unless you happen to get a bunch of Raid pros in one group. And definately use your mics. It is doable without but from experience, even one person (me, being a mute) unable to relay information makes things much harder.

While I think you make some valid points I think you should expand point #4 to include Leadership Competency. While it doesn't sound like you personally have this problem (you seem very organized actually) in my experience in the raid so far this has been the major turn off for me in PUG groups. The leader should lead, that's what he does, while under-qualified, under-performing players should take heed to not make themselves a burden, its the leader's job to trim the fat so to speak. The leader should get verbal responses from everyone to make sure the mic is working, the leader should either have people list their gear, or inspect every player, the leader should "assign roles" as much as he can (ie some players like relic, some players like DPS) The leader should have more than just a working knowledge of the raid (I would go so far as to say the leader should know the raid better then anyone else on the team) and I know it might be harsh but if someone isn't in line in the party I think the leader should kick and replace as needed. I've been in far too many raid groups that end in disaster because the leader just didn't lead.
