Playing my hunter alt makes me a better player. Since they are weaker in armor and recovery than my warlock, cover, evasion and precision is a must. I've found that it has upped my skills in this game.
Now that being said, I already out kill anyone I group with on strikes by a good margin. But playing as a hunter has upped this percentage by 10-20%. I do find a lot of horrible hunters... More so than any other class IMO. Probably because a lot of people are hunters as first class.
Each class requires a different mindset. That being said, learning each class can improve your game on your main.
Edit: Final observation. Hunters are the easiest and hardest class in the game to play. Their supers are easy to use and learn, but the player needs to know when an where to use the to the best advantage. A good hunter is a great asset to any group.

I dont know how you set your hunter subclass, but a gunslinger actually has better armor than a warlock. Warlocks just have better recovery. Just saying.

True. A good hunter is indeed a great asset, but 5 hunters with me in the vault whining at me to push the boss off the edge no longer seem like assets. Balanced fireteams, please?

that last part about when and where to use it goes for everyone

Very true.
