Careers

Since I'm a Senior in HS, I have begun to think about career fields that I might want to pursue. Obviously, I am considering the military. However, I think it might also be good for me to branch out my interests. Recently, I have become more and more interested in medical careers. Specifically, OB/GYN and Pathology (the latter of which seems to be an odd career field, given my sex) really call out to me as being particularly interesting. In one, you're helping women give birth and stay healthy. In the other, you're diagnosing diseases and stuff. I could see myself living a relatively fun and fulfilling life doing either. What careers are you guys in/pursuing, and why did you choose that path?

    • I just want to join the police, it's a career that interests me. Pay isn't particularly great but as long as I'm not bored then whatever. I don't think university or college is for me at the moment. Gonna finish school this year, hopefully with high enough grades that I could go to uni at some point if I ever feel like it.

          • I'm currently in my last semester of university doing a major in pathology. I actually plan on doing honours next years and take the research pathologist route over diagnostic pathology.

            • More or less the same as Ryan, but substitute 'Computer Science' with 'Physics'. If I do Masters after I graduate I guess I'd basically be pursuing a career in theoretical physics (Which is one of the few things I actually have any real interest in), but I don't know that I'd be able to find the motivation.

              • Right now I'm in engineering in college so when I graduate I'm probably going into university to continue my education. Haven't fully decide which type but probably mechanical engineering. What attracted me was when I was at the open house trying to see which program interested me I saw engineering program. I was instantly drawn to it and wanted to do it. Also before that I was always interested in technology and technical stuff.

              • I'm probably going to do Engineering! It's always been something I've been interested in, but the type of Engineering I want to do keeps changing, at the moment it's Mechatronics!

                • On track with my B.A. in International Relations, with a minor in Asia Studies, a certificate in Chinese (Language), and a certificate in National Security. I'll be going back to China this summer then will begin applying for Boren Scholarships and the Critical Language Scholarships, or I'll study in China for 4 months at my universities campus in Tianjin. After I'll start with internships or go graduate school. During which I'll be preparing for fellowships for the United Stated Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer.

                  • I actually just got a job as a Respiratory Therapist at a major hospital. Basically we take care do pulmonology and general anaesthesia as well as general cardiac care. We also work in out patient clinics by measuring lung efficiency and teaching people how to cope with asthma. There's a bit to do for every type of person. If emergency care sounds exhilarating and fast-paced and that's up your alley, you can do it. (Yeah , this totally includes life flights).

                    • My brother's a Pathologist Assistant, so there's two pieces of advice I can give you. 1. Make sure the school you go to has an anatomy course where you work on actual cadavers. I know it's creepy but it sticks out on a resume. That's literally why my bro was hired. 2. Get used to seeing gross stuff. Sometimes I wonder if my brother is making a Frankenstein monster at work from the stuff he tells me. You will get your hands dirty in Pathology.
