India as a world power. Could it happen?

According to this video, India needs to modernize its Navy, deal with its internal conflicts (such as a communist insurgency funded by China), and try to forge alliances with neighbors such as Bangladesh to prevent a rivalry with China. The video mentioned an alliance with Pakistan could help, but that's not happening anytime soon due to the Kashmir region (which India has rights to). But you guys should watch the rest of the video, it explains it better than me. Anyways, I think America can take advantage of this and prevent China from gaining any more influence over the subcontinent. If the US Air Force and US Navy started to have joint bases with the Indian Navy and Air Force, that could strengthen Indian-American relations by making India more secure and lessen China's influence over the Indian Ocean by having the US Navy help protect trade routes in the Indian Ocean and prevent the Chinese Navy from having control of the Indian Ocean. This could help contain china and prevent them from becoming a superpower. Also, if the DoD isn't doing it right now, they need to shift their focus towards the Pacific to try and contain China to prevent them from becoming a superpower. Any thoughts?

  • Well India needs a REAL government first, not a series of politicians still bowing down to that stupid caste system. The main limitation of India is the caste system, its unfair for the poor that they believe they will in their lifetime be poor.....

    • Alliance with Pakistan... That's less likely than the Leafs winning the Stanley Cup. And THAT'S saying something!

As Phil pointed out, India needs to deal with its internal issues before attempting to become a major world. I have said this before, multiple times, when discussing America's current foreign policy, a strong domestic front must be established before you look globally. For example, the cultural gap between the more urban and rural areas is becoming more and more obvious every passing day. Another issue is continuing economic growth, which was about 6.8% last quarter. Those two are the first that comes to my mind, but are by no means the most important. Other problems include: overpopulation, pollution, and poverty. As per China, the entire goal of the United States is to try and preserve the status quo. Placing military bases in a country that is a major strategic rival to China might do nothing but further stoke nationalistic fervor and increase Chinese militarization. Any aide will have to be through building the capacity of the Indian military itself. Furthermore, this will degrade US-Paki relations when we need to limit their influence in Afghanistan. Ninja: Aren't you a Freshman studying abroad? I know you don't live in the United States.

      • When the poor, hungry and homeless overpopulated ghettos get to stare across the way at the cities, they cannot become a world power.

              • India has a lot of growing pains to do. I've spent a little time in Pune for work. It is a lot like China was in its early years of high growth - industry growth is outpacing infrastructure and it is easy for the poor to get left behind there.

              • Alliance with Pakistan? Better luck in getting an alliance between Iran and the U.S. India should focus on their domestic issues before trying to become such an important power.

There are far too many domestic issues plaguing India for that to happen.

                  • The literacy rate in India is only 75% which is far from great and below the world average. All of the world super powers have much higher literacy rates. They can do it, but it can't happen overnight. Or in the next 10 years.

                  • There was a great video series on it that showed that India can do it by 2040. I'll edit this if I find it.
