Background Noise All around Tatakai, the newest arrivals had been quite busy. Fortifications had sprung up in unoccupied territories, placed strategically to prevent potential invasions and attacks. More soldiers and materiel were being ferried onto the planet from the three battlecruisers in Tatakaian orbit. Hawkwind was establishing quite a large presence on the planet, though it appeared that they were avoiding hostilities, and thus far had not done too much reaching out to new factions. Sidewinder was lucky enough to speak briefly with the Trayven, and unlucky enough to deal with Rubicon. For the mercenary, however, this was not the first time he’d been confronted by another large force, although he’d been much less prone to flat out assault Rubicon. Too costly... for now. Same with the Trayven. Burning bridges was a fool’s plan and Sidewinder was no fool. He refused hostile advance and hostile stance, but he made sure that he looked like a force to be trifled with. Enough soldiers and enough armor made a statement. Hawkwind was here to stay, and they were not going to be removed easily. Their true intentions, however, remained a mystery. Sidewinder was instructed to be vague, and he was quite good at falling orders. ~~~~~~ Walking the Line Rachael had been in Dojoville for some time since her rather nasty experience, and she’d so far received a mixed welcome. She had to admit, even if it cost her some standing and some potential perks, it felt good to be honest with herself. Her act of kindness to herself in confronting her past and determining that perhaps it was best to move on, however, was overshadowed by the presence of Hawkwind. She knew very well what their purpose was. Rachael had sat through the meetings, she’d heard the discussions, and she was wary. The mercenaries were known for their ruthlessness and their general lack of concern for collateral damage, and they had gear to rival that of the Amoridian Armed Forces. Aside from the general threat that they posed from what she could see, she also feared what would happen should they discover her identity. As she walked down the streets of the Dojo, a chill ran down her spine as she tried not to imagine being put through something worse than what the Courier had done to her. She knew precisely what her former comrades did for interrogation, and she preferred not thinking about that. Luckily for her, she at least now had armor and a mask, something to hide her identity. She could blend in in the Dojo, but nonetheless, she made it a goal to avoid contact with the patrolling mercenaries. Practice had her well-accustomed to hiding in plain sight, but never before had she actually been so fearful of what could potentially happen.
Both are open. Interact with patrolling Hawkwind soldiers, interact with Rachael, whatever’s good.
• That was... slightly disturbing but she could get along with it. As for what he said about his species, she was more or less confused, and felt it best not to ask. The voice in her head, however, was freaking her out a little bit. She was used to comms units in her ear but not another voice in her mind.

  • ^Sorry... I thought that if we discussed your situation further you’d prefer to keep it silent.^ *He whispered this to her apologetically.*

  • That was a wave of embarrassment that crossed her mind. Even in discussing her situation, she wasn’t quite fully comfortable. Nonetheless, she was curious as to his presence and her luck in running into him.

  • ^I just happened to see you and was drawn to you by your armor. Don’t worry, there are only two others here from my home dimension, so you’re not going to have people approaching you a lot because of that armor. Now that I know it’s you though, I think I could offer you some services if you need them.^

  • Her first thought was define services, just before mild concern and the focus of her training took over. She could hear soldiers, boots on the road, exosuits and bandoliers clinking together. The mercenaries were patrolling. This could go two ways, either hostilely if they started something, or calmly if they simply carried on.

*Vorim’s ears tilted in the direction of the soldiers and she heard his voice in her head again.* ^I am a therapist. If you need emotional help or have other mind-related issues, you can call me. Now, play along. I’ll speak for you if they start asking questions.^ *He let go of her hand and pulled out a slip of paper. He unfolded it to reveal a map of Dojoville and the Dojo and scratched his head in confusion.* ^Hmm... Maybe it’s this way?.. The training facility shouldn’t be too far from here...^ *He traced a claw up a road on the map.*

  • Training facility? She was intrigued and confused, but anything to keep her away from the mercenaries. She didn’t want them to have any reason to be suspicious of her, and so she nodded after he traced out the path. As they stood looking at the map, they could hear the soldiers getting closer, along with the sound of what was probably heavy armor.

  • *He raised his head and peered around, his eyes casually passing by the soldiers. He pointed in a direction which wasn’t toward the training facility, nor was it directly away from the soldiers either. If they just started to quickly walk in the opposite direction then it could arouse suspicion.* ^Okay, it must be this way then...^ *He began to walk while still holding the map, making sure he didn’t start moving without her.*

  • She followed him in a manner completely betraying the worry in her mind. She walked confidently and without concern for them, sticking with him. The soldiers, who were accompanied by what appeared to be an infantry fighting vehicle, continued down the street with minimal concern for the two armored individuals walking away. They moved with caution and concern, scanning for potential ambush points, IED hiding spots, and any sort of trap in their way as they went.

  • *He kept going until they were a good distance down the street before stopping.* ^And there we go.^

  • She nodded once they were out of the way of the mercenaries, glad that they were not in the slightest interested in her.

^Now that they’re gone, back to what we were talking about?^ *I folded the map back up and pocketed it.*

  • Something about a training facility? Where it was? Others with the armor Alice had given her?

  • *He snapped his fingers.* ^The training facility was part of the act, but if you actually want to know how to get there I can show you. But no, I was talking about my abilities and services.^

  • Talking right now about things probably wasn’t the best... she wasn’t quite alright even after she’d discussed it with Alice, but Alice hadn’t seemed to grasp the full scope of what she was guilty of. Maybe that was just how these things worked... you suffered alone and nobody would really understand it. Rachael huffed, trying to drive those thoughts away.

  • ^You don’t have to suffer alone, y’know. That’s not the way it works with me. If you don’t want to though, you don’t have to.^

  • Yeah? Well maybe it was better that way. That was what she’d been taught by Maelstrom and Roland... internalize suffering and don’t show pain. She’d had that beaten into her so many times she couldn’t help it.

  • ^My cousin tried the same thing. She’s a six foot tall tiger who could lift me up with one hand. Lords, she was a mess when she tried to deal with her pain and regret on her own... I’m not forcing you into anything, it’s just an offer. Now, let’s get you to the training facility.^ *He began to lead her toward a large building in the distance.*
