EXOTIC UPGRADES RESETTED?

I got on about 10 mins ago, i went to the tower to buy an exotic shard off xur to max my Achylophage symbiote. When I used the shard on helmet my upgrades on the helm resetted and the shard is gone?? Does this always happen? First time buying/using a exotic shard Sorry for posting on here wouldnt let me post in help forum for some reason Any help appreciated
