The Frontier: Light Among Darkness Ch. 8: The Knights of Dawn

Orion gazed around at the farm. “So what is this place?” He asked Travis, getting an idea but just wanting to know for sure. “It's a place where many of those who can or do not wish to go to the city go.” Sir Travis responded. “Many live here, are born here, love here, and die here. It's a quaint little outpost, I’ll show you around.” They stepped onto a wooden bridge, where guards stood, wearing armored vests and wielding auto rifles. “Good morning Devan, I seek entry to the Farm.” Travis said, unsheathing his blade and putting it point down in the soil. “Aye, Travis. But is it truly you?” A middle aged, bulky man asked. Travis swept his sword over Devan, and Devan’s breath relaxed. “That does it, friend. Enter.” The guard welcomed. Then he stopped Orion. “I'm gonna stop you right here. I will need to see some identification.” Devan said firmly. Spark popped into view, and settled over Orion’s shoulder. “We’re guardians, man. Isn't that enough?” The ghost asked. The look on the man’s face did not waver. “You can turn bad just as much as the rest of us, ghost.” “Apologies, Devan.” Travis said. “I have brought them here to speak with Hawthorne and my fellow Knights about an off-world threat.” Devan nodded. “I see. If you don't mind me askin’, what is it?” He leaned in conspiratorially. The Knight fished a small object from an odd, worn leather satchel on his back, and held it out. “Thrall claws.” Devan stated. “Yes. And the beast I plucked them from had made its home on Ganymede, a Jovian Moon.” Travis explained. “Well. That is a very important topic. Come on through, then.” The guard admitted, and then moved to let them through. Orion surveyed the defences. “Do you get attacked often? He asked. Devan pursed his lips. “The amount of times we’ve been attacked can be counted on one hand. We’re a fairly small establishment, so we managed to stay hidden from most. There was that one time with the House of Kings, but it was just a little patrol. Unfortunately, someone died.” Devan said, shaking his head at the memory. “Now run along, unless you want to be here the whole afternoon rememberin’.” Travis gave a slight bow, and then gestured to his companions to come. “He's a guardian, isn't he.” Orion stated. “Well, I don’t like to badger him about it, but he is one of the old breed.” Orion raised his artificial eyebrows. “The old breed? Of what? Guardians?” Sir Travis, champion of the Light, leader of The Knights of Dawn, became hushed. “He was a warlord from the age of the Iron Lords.” Lyla sucked in a breath, and quickly glanced at Devan, who was whistling a tune to himself. “Light and Darkness.” Orion cursed. “Devan the Disemboweler?” Travis gave a curt nod. “Yes. But please stop talking about it.” He said quietly. Orion immediately shut up. Travis could literally roast an enemy by colliding with them, or put one over his knee and break them in half, but when he was quiet he seemed far more dangerous. “Right then. Let's go see this Hawthorne.” Lyla said, breaking the silence. Travis nodded, and started at a brisk pace towards a small porch. “Hawthorne is a tough one. So don't treat her like royalty. But be respectful.” He instructed them. They saw a medium size, medium height woman standing on the porch, cleaning a disassembled hand cannon while a small hawk sat on a perch, ripping at a juvenile rabbit it had sunk its talons into a few minutes earlier. She cocked her head, and then glanced at where Travis stood, motionless, near the bottom of the stairs to the porch. She sighed. “For Light sake Travis, you're not a damn statue. Come up here.” She beckoned. “Yes my Lady.” He intoned thoughtlessly, as if he had said it many times before, and then he gave a nod that was followed up by a dip in his hips. “Travis, I have told you hundreds of times not to call me “My Lady”. And yet you just said it. Again.” She said frustratingly, but the corner of her mouth was curled in a smirk. “I don't see the problem.” The Knight said. “You are My Lady.” Hawthorne sighed. Orion stared at her. She was a muscular, lean woman, with short hair underneath a little head covering that looked like a headscarf. Her eyes, however, were what made Orion wonder. They were cold, hard, flinty. She was laughing, but at the same time he could tell that she was checking her senses, watching, listening, feeling. Orion knew those eyes. He saw an artificial semblance of them every time he looked at a reflective surface. Hawthorne was a survivor, Orion gathered. She had fought tooth and claw for survival and to help a starving village, and when she had gained the respect of the latter’s people, she was still working to earn it. “Hunter.” Hawthorne noted. “You're staring.” Orion was roused from his thoughts. “Sorry… just saw something I thought I knew.” Orion explained half heartedly. Almost as if she knew what he had been thinking, she nodded knowingly. “I would say the same thing. Except you have a helmet on.” She joked. Lyla snorted. “Orion… emotional? Thinking deep thoughts? That's unusual. Usually he just kicks ass and takes names.” She responded. Sir Travis cleared his throat. “My Lady. I have come to speak with the other Knights. Do you know where they are? And if so, will you tell me?” He asked politely. “Yes yes, of course I will.” Hawthorne answered. “Team Daybreak is conducting sparring sessions in the Chapel, while Sunrise Squadron is mostly in the server room and the soccer field.” She rattled off. “Why? What religious crusade are you off to now?” She asked, curious. “Not a crusade. It's an urgent issue. Hive, in the Jovians. Using sorcery to interfere with Ghosts, and new breeds.” Travis aid, his voice quickening. Hawthorne grunted. “Well, that is quite the siteation.” She drawled. “Now go on. I have to watch the destroyer over here and make sure he doesn't choke on a bone.” Still on his perch, the hawk scarfed down a tendon and ripped at the bloody mess he had made. Travis staunchly walked away, followed closely by Orion, and less closely by Lyla, who was distracted by the sight of a mother hen with six chicks. She hurried to catch up, and then watched a soccer ball fly into the air. I know, a bit of an abrupt ending. But the chapter isn't over. The next part is continued in the comments! There, you will meet the Knights. Also, remember to bump this part of the post and not the comments part, if you want your bumps to actually count. CONTINUED The Knights of Dawn were playing soccer. Lady Chio leapt into the air and scissor kicked the white-and-black-checkered ball towards the goal, shooting victoriously, until the powerful frame of Sir Seth whipped his head forward and knocked it away from the goal, his thick goaltending gloves on his hands. “We also have a soccer field here, and even a functional ball. Although when it goes down the hill…” he glanced down. “Thankfully our increased speed lets us get to it. In any case, the younger knights like to play soccer here, and the younger knights mostly compose Sunrise Squadron.” he went quiet again, and watched as the Knights joyously played soccer. Well, maybe played isn't the right wording. “Fighting” soccer would be a better way to describe it. Sir Sebastian, a large Knight actually wearing guardian armor that looked like that of a medieval knight, struck out with his foot to block an offensive maneuver, and sent Lady Maxine spinning through the air. She landed on her feet, but was slightly dazed. “HAVE AT THEE!” the Titan Knight roared, and then punted the ball as hard as he could through the air. Sir Clefspeare sighed, and then walked over to Sebastian frustratingly. “Dang it, Seb!” he said. “That’s the third time today you’ve kicked the ball down the hill!” “”I shall retrieve the ball, fellow Knight, and I shall return.” Sebastian rumbled, and then thundered down the hill with enormous strides. “Hark, Daybreak!” Called Travis, and the knights on the field and some coming out of a small pavilion responded. “Hark, Lord Knight!” they shouted back. Lady Maxine grinned and walked over to Travis. “What’s up? Seb kicked the ball down the hill again, so we won’t be playing for a while, which means we can talk for a bit.” she asked. “Gather the rest of Sunrise Squadron. We have an urgent situation to discuss.” the Lady Knight hardened, and then shouted out to Sir Seth, Sir Clefspeare, and Lady Chio. “Gather the Squad and get to the chapel! I’ll go get Seb.” she ordered, and then bounded down the hill. “Good ones, those are. Real promise in them. The other founding knights are down here, however. Right this way.” Travis said. “When did this all start?” Lyla asked. She was curious about Travis, and his recruitment of the Knights. Travis looked at the ground for a few seconds, and then began. As he spoke, he gently took his helmet off and cradled it at his side. It was an honest, handsome face, creased with the stress and joy of hundreds of years of hard work. He had brown eyes flecked with hazel, and dark brown hair that had recently been cut short, closer to his skull than before. Those hazel flecked eyes tracked off into the distance and glazed over with thought, remembering times gone by. “The Battle of Twilight gap was over, but people that didn’t have guardians to protect them or enormous walls to hide behind were scared of being carried off into the darkness and devoured, or worse. The Iron Lords were long since gone, and so those who lived beyond the City had nobody to protect them. That is when I had the idea to form an order, a group that would drive back to growing darkness and herald the coming dawn. I will not pretend that we have driven back The Darkness, but we have protected these lands for a century or two. It started with me, and then Vixen, and then Burton and Lia, and then it grew. We gained more recruits, people who wanted to make a difference. And so we did.” He stopped, and then thought a bit more as Lyla noticed the scenery changing. they were now moving down a path that led down into the forested hillside. Orion wasn't paying attention to that - he was thinking about what Travis had just said. The strange thing was, he had a story so close to Travis’s that it was eerie. He too had wanted to make a difference when he was a new guardian. He too had wished someone was able to protect the defenseless. Travis continued. “Back when the Hive were first appearing on Earth, they started attacking outside settlements in Old Alaska and Russia. We escorted some refugees, and then slew a powerful Knight that had been terrorizing another village of starving people. That felt good. But then came the siege of Kings. Roskin, a powerful Baron of the House of Kings, led a siege against us, after he heard about the Shard. A few Knights died. So did a lot of innocent people. It was our first true test. Lady Vixen, who you will soon meet, slew him herself after he killed someone dear to her. She turned his bones into a rocking chair, apparently.” Travis mused. They followed the forest path for a while more, the path dappled with shadows from the trees overhead. Lyla looked up and felt the vertigo from the towering conifer trees, tall trunks shooting into the sky, dark green needles quietly rasping in the wind. She noticed a gradual shift in the vegetation, and before long the dark coniferous forest became a light deciduous forest. In a clearing between birch and oak trees, there sat a small, humble stone-and-wood chapel. Four figures were dueling with bright, gleaming blades in front of the door to the chapel, the clanging sounds of their blades clashing ringing like bells in the crisp air. Lyla chose this moment to take off her helmet and breathe in the fresh air, something she normally wasn't able to do in the Tower or out in the field. Blond-brown hair spilled out from underneath her helmet, and its tips rested on her shoulders. Her violet eyes shone in the sunlight with happiness, and darted around to survey her surroundings - she loved this place already. “Well I'll do it too then.” Orion muttered, and then took off his helmet as well. He had a lean face, with yellow eyes and a medium sized mouth that moved almost like a human’s when he talked. Orion was not as wonderstruck as Lyla - in his years out in the frontier he had seen incredible beauty - a sunset on the ocean, the Reef, a volcanic eruption on Venus, and the Aurora Borealis. But wilds like this were newer to him - real, sunny, beautiful woodlands that had actual ecosystems within them. A closer look at the duelists by the Chapel revealed that they wore full armor, and were actually using their Light in different ways to change up a fight. Lady Lianne, bearing scarlet and orange armor, leapt over Sir Burton, her partner (in more than just sparring), and stabbed him in the back. “Nice.” He said with a grin, and then with a grunt struck back, channeling his Solar Light into his sword Sunburst for a fiery swing. They danced, striking back and forth, sparks flying, to so fast it would have been hard for a normal being to see. Further away, the siblings Soni and Shadow were fighting more slowly, their blades Blastburner and Solstriker still clashing but not as violently. They didn’t want to fight too hard, since they were only sparring, but they were being pressed a little bit to fight harder. That pressure came from a figure lounging in the shadows of the Church, sitting in an honest-to-Light rocking chair and sharpening a lot of small blades. “Keep it up, Soni! Press harder, Shadow!” she called encouragingly, until she spotted Travis and his guests in tow. “Hello, Travis.” she purred. “Who have you brought me today?”. “Orion, Lyla.” Travis said. “This is Lady Fox. Vixen, this is Orion and Lyla. They are guardians.” “Call me Vixen.” Vixen offered, and then she held out a hand for each of them to shake. Vixen was… well, beautiful in the way that a wolf or lion is beautiful. She wasn’t the stereotypical sultry-type-vixen, she was more like the kind of fox that would lap up your blood after slashing your throat. On a carved table next to her, there sat another of the long swords that were customary to The Knights of Dawn, and a helmet forged into the likeness of a snarling fox head. Vixen herself had bright blue eyes and a head of short red hair, similar in length to that of Lyla but actually pulled into loose braids. “What now, Travis? Why have you brought these guardians to our sanctuary?” She asked. Travis thought for a moment, and a dark look over his face. “War. Bring all of the Knights together for a council. Prepare for battle.” He said calmly. Wow. Not to brag, but I actually really liked writing that chapter! It was a treat to bring The Knights of Dawn into life through your names. I hope you enjoyed this chapter too! Also, my mistake, the fishy thing you may want to look out for will be in the next chapter, War Council.
