If you've never had an opportunity to run the relic, you're not going to be able to run the relic.
It takes practice to know what you're doing, just like everything else in the raid. Did you try to explain it to them so they could figure it out?

oh come on. if you are doing VOG hard you should know how to run the relic. at least on atheon. especially if you are 32.

Not. If. You. Haven't. Run. It. You don't just intuit those skills when you become 32. And in some groups, if you run with the same people a lot, there's that one guy who always wants to run the relic. So he's the one who does it. I've never run it at level 31. I haven't done VoG a lot either, truth be told, but there's always someone who wants to grab it, and I haven't felt the need to make everyone wait while I learn it.

Hmm. Not really getting carried, when I'm holding my own. I do plan on learning the relic though. But all I'm saying is, if you're not willing to help someone learn (which it sounds like you're not, considering you think people should just KNOW it), then you're part of the problem. If that group didn't have anybody else who knew what to do, that's the time to take a little while to explain it.
