Toxic community appeared for two reasons. Mainstream popularity(CoD, LoL, Dota etc) and/or false marketing/overhype a product. I believe this community wouldn't be this toxic if Bungie didn't oversell this game. Back in July 2014 after the Alpha(?), the forum were brimming with ideas and theories about destiny. It was truly a feedback forum. People talked about the Fallen and Hive, they talked about weapons and specifically Shingen C and people were writing fan fiction. Everyone was really looking forward to this game and get ready to soak into a new richly detailed fantasy world from the creators of Halo. All that dashed away after we killed some heart thing in the black garden and the speaker giving a really uninspired speech. Everything is a disjointed mess. The back of the box promised epic story and it was nowhere to be found, that's clearly false marketing.

  • The lack of story can be attributed to Activision essentially firing Joe Staten. If you believe 404Architect, Joe had created the game that we were going to be sold, but Activision wanted to intentionally water it down to market it to a larger audience. Isn't it kinda weird that Destiny is rated T but other large triple A titles are usually rated M? But the reason why Activision had to over-hype the game was because it was a turd. If everyone knows it's a turd, nobody will buy it. But yes, I do attribute the toxicity to the points you have mentioned. But it's like I said, they can be bullies and make themselves feel good without anyone able to reprimand them for it. A forum should be a place of discussion/information... not "git gud scrub." But thank you all for the great responses and a great discussion! You guys are the part of the community I am proud to be a part of.

  • Take off your tin foil hat. Bungie had a contract stating a deadline for the game's release. They chose to cut a bunch of shit to make that date. Their fault they couldn't get their shit together in time. The guy in charge of the story probably quit or was fired over strong disagreements when they decided to butcher the story. Activision isn't at fault here.

  • I have come to believe that, while 404architect was close to the truth, he wasn't who he claimed to be. The known events much more closely match problems within the management of Bungie than an overreach by Activision.

  • Until we get an official story on what happened during that last year of development, we honestly won't know. There was obvious overreach somewhere that caused contention with Joe and Marty that was so bad it caused them to leave. But as fun as theories are, I want to see the truth come forth.

  • We will never hear an objective version of the complete story. There is evidence of a power struggle within Bungie, though, and the faction that wanted the Destiny that we were promised lost.

  • Yep, and at the end of the day, what we got is the only thing that matters. So we have to figure out how to make the best out of the turd we were given.
