Unless I'm on the heroic Rasputin hive level where the knight majors spawn next to where I hide from the ogre, I don't use shotguns. Swordbreaker has saved me from some situations, but if I'm ever that close to something it's a melee and get the hell out. I prefer to keep my distance. Gotta keep a reactionary gap.
