Why aren't YOU using Shotguns in PVE?

Do share, why don't you use them? And I'd rather have more specific reason than "I don't like them" (which is a valid reason ofcourse), because I'm curious why don't you like them. Thank you! EDIT: Typo, and thank you for feedback. :p

    BACKGROUND:
I mainly play PvE. My main is a Hunter (with low HP and slow recovery on my abilities). I have played the Raids a handful of times, but I don't consider myself a raider.
If you are shooting a shotgun in PvE, that means that you have left cover to get close to your enemies. That's a bad idea to do on the Nightfall, and to a lesser extent on the Weekly Heroics. The incoming damage is just too high to justify leaving cover. That's saying nothing of enemy melee attacks, which you are suddenly put at risk of. When a Knight can hit you with his sword while you're shotgunning his ankle-biting Acolytes, you're gonna have a bad time. For something like the Pit in CE raid, you would think shotguns would perform well, but there are simply too many Thralls to deal with before your magazine is empty. Swarms of enemies quickly overwhelm a shotgun's firepower.
Bungie's logic is eluding me here. I thought strike bosses had the ground-pounds to specifically discourage shotgunning them. It sounds like they're saying "Hey, don't use a shotgun here. Wait, why is nobody using a shotgun?!"
