They're so limited by their range it hardly ever makes sense to use them. I'd rather run a scout or hand cannon and keep a reasonable distance for the most part while still hitting pretty hard. If an enemy gets in shotgun range, I usually just punch them and back off. Trying to stay in range to use shotguns for any length of time gets me killed.
