I'm just not a big fan of them. The close range means I'm limited to using it in very few situations, and the fact that you can't really get crits with them means that the only way to do massive damage is to be right by the enemies. I typically like having a fusion rifle for close-mid range. It can be just as devastating as a shotgun, but can be used at a farther distance. It's not as easy to switch to, but makes It very easy to clear out rooms quickly. For bosses and more difficult areas, I usually go with a sniper. The ability to get high critical hits while staying out of the boss's melee range is the key to quick and easy strikes. Tho I typically go with the lowest zoom scope, as I don't care to be too far from the battle. The shotgun just doesn't suit my playstyle in Destiny. I used them in the beginning, and quite a bit when I got invective, but have since started dismantling most of them on the spot as I just don't find it the best choice to use.
