It represents the guardians as the antibodies fighting the spread of the darkness (infection) across the universe. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibody That article (very long and science-y, I know) actually has a lot of hilariously coincidental terms in it, like "light chains" and "class switching" for example. Interesting read.
