The stranger doesn't have the time to tell you why she doesn't have time to tell you why she doesn't have time to tell you why she doesn't have time to tell you HER -blam!-ING NAME that honestly bugged me Hopefully I and the help of others can clear up a bit of the mystery around her.
Here's what we know about her from in-game experiences
She contacts you from the Ishtar region on Venus
She fights a war with the Vex
She reports to someone who we don't as of yet know
She is no longer, but may have once been, a guardian
She was not "forged in light"
She is an exo
She has a gun from the future, and gave it to you
If anyone has anything else they feel may be important please comment below
This is the information about The Exo Stranger from the grimoire cards
Some Believe shes the last of an ancient exo squadron, fighting a long-forgotten war.
this has importance that i'll explain in theories.
Ghost Fragment: The Exo Stranger details how she stands where she has stood before. She clearly travels through time, and i fell she stands where she will one day die.
There are always the dead. Their names shift.
Sometimes i think i see myself among the dead.
But i am resolute
.
This is honestly all the information i am positive is about her. but there is another that I have seen as an argument of her origin.
Ghost Fragment: Future War Cult.
The short version of this is that the FWC has obtained a device that is capable to use and see the future. Every future gazed upon told the destruction of the Human/Awoken/Exo race, by the Vex. The Vex destroyed the tower in one timelime, the darkness wins no matter what we did. The machine was very hazardous to a human/awoken however; so only an Exo would be able to fully withstand its power. If you have read the card directly you'll notice that they talk to a ghost, this is not the being spoken to in the quote I'll add below. Luckily they had a that they found dead on the battle field. Remember what i said about the first quote They ask this Exo to step into the machine, and prepare to travel.
We found you in pieces in Siberia, and repaired you as well as we could.
What do you say? Are you well enough to travel?
I understand why people who have read the grimoire will fight that they sent a ghost into the future. But i firmly believe that it was ALL misdirection. The main reason why i say this is Banshee. He isn't as useless as everyone says, simply the old man who tells an important story.
Banshee's quotes:
Had these with us at Twilight Gap. Went pretty badly. Not the gun's fault.(This shows banshee was a soldier once)
What was the name of that officer? Only I remember her, and so little. How her rifle jammed, then gone.
What was her name. Fierce eyes, full of light. The hell was it.
Best Exo I ever served under up and vanished one night. That's war.
How many times has my system been wiped. 41, 42, 43?
These quotes from banshee can be heard just by hanging out with him. He talks of an Exo who fell, possibly since he was with her which means the all Exo squadron i mentioned earlier. His system has been wiped so his memories aren't exactly in tact. I think "She" fell in Siberia, only to be found by the FWC and rebuilt.
So let's assume I'm correct here. That means we have here the importance of her origins, but there's more to her. If she was sent into the future, and she is currently involved in an insurgency against the Vex, who leads it? I don't think it's her. I hope you have read everything you need to know about the Vex, because as i said for another post and here it is.
When Kabr went into the Vault, he gave us our only hope in defeating Atheon. He gave up his own light, but not his life, to create the Aegis. As said previously, he knew he would talk again, but not as himself. People seem to think that this was his fate. But what if it was another's? I think it was Praedyth's.
Recently I've discussed the Vex with another player. They brought to my attention that the Sol Progeny translates into sun descendant. This could mean descendant of the sun light. What if the traveler made the Vex, not maliciously, but still created them. They observed the traveler and saw potential to surpass it, and set about to do so. In their advancement they discovered the Darkness, which was clearly harder to comprehend and etc... from that point its already been explained in my previous post.
If Atheon was truly against the Darkness this could be why he would send Praedyth into the future to fight them at their strongest. It could also be why he drops the Vex Mythoclast. This gun has been said to have actually been made in the future obviously not though its only 323 damage :p and is only given to the worthy to fight off the Hive and more importantly Crota. And think about it. If hard mode is the mode that counts, a solar primary is definitely something to have. This heavily implies that the Hive are strongly in league with the darkness, but as always, that's for another post.

I pray you aren't insinuating that the Stranger is Praedyth. Praedyth may not even be, or have been, a Guardian. For all we know he is a Vex Mind like the Hezen. Emphasis on he. They use such a pronoun in the flavor text of the Timepiece. The Stranger is most definitely female. Mm.
