Be a little playful with him, but be gentle. Don't push it on too fast. I made that mistake before where I jumped the gun and asked a girl out too soon. It's not fun to not know the other person's mind. Take my advice, don't listen to the other dick heads who don't give a crap about the fact that you're asking in public about something you help with.
