mars isn't the furthest planet from the sun.
while it's theorized that mars, at one time, had liquid water, and possibly even life, it currently has no protective magnetic field like the earth does...scientists suspect that it did, at one time, but that it collapsed, allowing solar wind to slowly strip away the atmosphere. this loss of atmosphere would have caused liquid water to evaporate away into space, leaving only the solid ice at the poles, intact.
