Watching a twitch stream of MCC and somebody asked why the Forerunners found the Halo rings to be their best method for dealing with the Flood.
Can't remember the full answer myself, care to fill me and that guy in?

It wasn't the best way. It was the ONLY way. The Forerunners tried every other possibility but Halo was the only solution. It destroyed every living thing bigger than a squirrel (that includes Flood).

Not true. The Halo Array unleashed a pulse wave that specifically annihilated organisms with a sufficient sentience to be controlled by the Flood. The Lekgolo, with their gestalt intelligence, were not affected.
