Help on gearing fresh(ish) Hunter on DLC

So I got Destiny on Monday and I've been playing nonstop. I got to level 20 on my first character in roughly 2-3 days. Got full level 20 fully upgraded blues (level 25). I got a Badger CCL Scout Rifle from the postmaster as soon as I downloaded the DLC (yesterday). Been using it ever since and I have to say I like it, but I don't know if it's worth upgrading as a first Legendary (very limited on supplies obviously being fresh 20). Only other legendary I have so far is a Plug ONE.1 Fusion from a blue engram that I am also liking (doesn't have reduced charge time though :(). I think I understand that I need to get my light level upgraded via getting legendary armor from the vendors/RNG drops, but I was just wondering if it would be a waste to upgrade my only Legendary weapons since I am so new. Main questions are how rare are the rare upgrade materials? Am I being overly cheap trying not to upgrade anything until I know for sure what I want to use? I do like the scout rifle - how good are scout rifles currently? Also I do like the Badger - I don't mind using it for the time being - but how should I go about getting new legendary weapons (on the fence about committing to upgrading a weapon until I've tried some of the other Legendary/Exotic weapons)? Should I spend currency on armor to get my light level up first and let the weapons come to me from drops and stuff or should I just buy a good weapon off the bat and get it upgraded asap? Sorry about the super long post, but I am really enjoying this awesome game and I want to continue to continue to progress and gear up, I'm just not entirely sure how to go about it. I am mostly an MMO player and it seems harder to get a sense of community on a console without a "Global" chat feature. Hard to get advice in game and meet players. Seems like very few people use voice chat with strangers in matchmaking. Also since the game is first and foremost a shooter, weapons have a lot of differences other than damage and stats (unlike traditional MMOs). Mainly in the way they "handle" and the term "best" seems more subjective in this game, which makes finding relevant information on Weapons difficult. If you are still reading this, then thanks for your time and help! REALLY appreciate it!
