The build of the warlock player should be appropriate to the situation. For example - VoG hard raid it is entirely appropriate to have self res so that in the event of your death, and I'm sure you die in the raid just like everyone else, you can return and continue to help the team.
Crota battle, however, death not only inconveniences everyone but can interrupt key moments in the battle by generating an oversoul. At this point coming back doesn't ease the situation, besides adding DPS to the OS, so playing in a very safe manner to avoid being downed at all is more appropriate.
In the first instance I will use Fireborn. In the second I would absolutely look to reduce my incoming damage when being aggressive to generate orbs.
Your one size fits all attitude is a detriment to yourself and your raiding party. My attitude and my team mates' attitudes means that we are flexible and competent in a variety of situations. Every one person knows that changing their load outs is required for different activities.
