I've used self res as a backup for the nightfall and only use it if the team is about to wipe. If I happen to die and my teammates can get me I don't use it. It's more of a break glass in case of emergency tool for me. That being said, I've gone many nightfalls without using my super at all.
So yes, it can be a crutch but it can also be a team saver.
Chances are you've been saved by a self res warlock before so I don't understand your hostility

Where's the hostility? Try using Radiant Skin instead of Self-Res. You can use your super way more often, generate way more orbs and be generally more useful and aggressive.
