Gut hooks aren't for cutting guts. They are for gutting an animal. You use the hook to cut the skin, muscle, and fat holding the guts in the body cavity. A gut hook is handy because you don't want to puncture any of the intestines while doing this. Check YouTube for videos on gutting deer.

Ya. As a hunter I just refer to them as guts. It's always fun explaining why my knife has that hook and watching someone's face as I describe the horrible aroma that's released if you puncture the stomach.

Surprisingly, intestine are pretty resilient. If you get your hands on some that have not been tampered with, you can pull them all out relatively easily.
